Ref: N-22-134 RA/NRS/Phillipines Research Associate, Coordinator The CGIAR research initiative on ‘Resilient Cities through Sustainable Urban and Peri-urban Agrifood Systems’ (Urban Initiative) hasbeenapprovedforimplementationfrom April2022 to March2025. The UrbanInitiative will be implemented bya diverse teamof researchers fromatleastfive CGIAR centers andexternalresearchpartners,organizedinfive thematic work packages and delivered in at least six countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. One of the six sites chosen for priority actions is Metro Manila in the Philippines, which offers strong researchcapacity and policy commitment to strengthening urban food systems. The Initiative seeks a Research Associate,Coordinator to provide coordination, selected research implementation, research management, partnership management and communications support for the Initiative in the Philippines.
About the Initiative:
As part of its 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy, CGIAR has launched the global Resilient Cities Initiative to undertake scientific research, facilitate innovation and strengthen capacities in urban food systems with the aim to improve diets, economic opportunities,andenvironmentalhealthforthe urbanpoor.Forthe firstthree years(2022-25), the Initiative will work in six countries, including Peru, through local governments, universities, civil society groups, and private sector organizations tostrengthenaccesstoanduse of improvedtechnologies,skills,informationandmanagementpractices.Key objectives include greater efficiency and safety of urban and peri-urban food production, equitable business and employment opportunities in the informal food sector, increased investments in circular bioeconomy, better food environments for adolescents, and better integration of agrifood into urban planning and governance.
About the role: The successful candidate will work with interdisciplinary teams at CIP’s regional office and Initiative’s team in Phillipines and headquarters in Peru and other country regions. This position will be based in Manila, Phillipines. Key responsibilities:
• Provide coordination and communications support for Initiative operations in the Philippines, working closely with the CIP Country Office and other entities as assigned.
• Coordinate and lead regular planning and review meetings of Initiative staff and partners operating in the Philippines and bring any majorconstraints or opportunities to the attention of the Initiative Leader. • Support the Initiative’s MELIA implementation in the Philippines, contributing to datacollation and reporting as will be agreed with the MELIA manager.
• Support partnership arrangements and collaborative activities by the Initiative with national and local partners in the Philippines, facilitate and catalyze communications with Initiative scientists, and monitor the performance of these partnerships.
• Contribute to the design and implementation of selected research activities as will be agreed with senior scientists, including on food markets, food production,and enterprise development.
• Contribute to Initiative-wide planning and review processes and participate in regular meetings and periodic events as will be agreed.
What are we looking for?
• Research capacity in social and/or agronomic scienceswith an MSc level qualification
• Detailed and up-to-date knowledge of the national, regional and local agriculture and food sectors in the Philippines is essential
• Strong previous experience undertaking participatory research in food production, value chains and marketing in the Philippines, including in urban and peri-urban areas and with informal enterprise groups
• Familiarity and experience working in partnership with Government institutions at national, regional and municipal levels • Excellent skills in partnership management, research coordination, and reporting in international program contexts such as in the CGIAR
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
