IRC Background:  The mission of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. The IRC’s Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration (RAI) department creates opportunities for refugees and other vulnerable migrants to gain stability and control of their future in the U.S. and Europe. RAI serves more than 50,000 individuals each year, through a portfolio of programs aimed at five core outcomes: Health, Safety, Economic Wellbeing, Education and Power. IRC accomplishes this through collaboration with individuals, families and communities, direct services and supports, advocacy, and partnerships with formal and non-formal systems. 

Scope of work

The Safeguarding Program Coordinator will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Director for Duty of Care. They will be responsible for project management, coordination, and communication support to the Safeguarding Unit, including the effective and efficient implementation of the IRC’s Safeguarding Strategy. This will include coordination of all unit level planning, support to committees and communities of practice related to governance of the safeguarding strategy, human-centered materials development, data management and collation, knowledge management, budget development and management, and forms of coordination and support.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Duty of Care, this role will work closely with Regional Safeguarding Advisors, the Health, Safeguarding, and Wellbeing team, members of the People & Culture department, external consultants, contractors, Human Resources, and other IRC functional units. Limited travel is expected for this role.

Major Responsibilities

Planning, Management & Coordination – 50%

  • Ensure effective governance of the IRC’s FY23-24 safeguarding strategy by supporting relevant committees and communities of practice
  • Ensure the Safeguarding unit’s efforts are supported by clear workplans that monitor progress and assess
  • Monitor progress against regional and global workplans and metrics
  • Support change management to ensure that Safeguarding Unit’s efforts are designed and delivered in a manner that builds on existing organizational structures and processes and are coherent with other major change efforts
  • Coordinate support to and capacity building of IRC’s network of Safeguarding employees and volunteers
  • Provide coordination to support SGU’s relationships with key internal collaborators

Communications – 35%

  • Update and maintain IRC’s Safeguarding RescueNet page
  • Support internal and external unit communications through product creation, meeting scheduling, and planning
  • Support creation of human-centered communications products and tools
  • Respond to and appropriately triage safeguarding queries and requests for support
  • Copy, edit and format safeguarding materials

Unit Operations and Management – 15%

  • Provide excellent operational support to the unit, including:
  • Administrative support to HR processes
  • Travel planning and expense management support
  • Budget development and monitoring
  • Liaising with external vendors, including coordinating the translation of safeguarding materials

Key Reporting Relationships:

Position Reports to: Senior Director for Duty of Care

Indirect Reporting: None

Education: Degree in relevant field relating to humanitarian action, social work, protection, sexual violence, training, or equivalent professional experience

Work Experience: Demonstrated program management experience, ideally with an international humanitarian organization.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Experience with client protection from abuse and exploitation, sexual violence in development and humanitarian contexts in conflict/displacement settings, and knowledge of international protection frameworks and mechanisms on safeguarding would be a bonus
  • Capable of applying skills and knowledge in a range of capacities
  • Ability to develop multi-media communication materials
  • Experience coordinating with different stakeholders in a dynamic operating environment
  • Flexibility and independence, ability to work remotely
  • Consistent track record in working with teams, excellent social skills, positive and professional attitude, and ability to lead and work well with teams with varied strengths in a complex international environment and with multiple partners

Language Skills: Professional fluency in spoken and written English. Proficiency in one other IRC relevant language (French, Arabic, Spanish) an asset.

Working Environment: Travel up to 20% of time

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget.  Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirement
