The Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB) leads FAO’s work under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and liaises with other multilateral environmental agreements and action plans, while mainstreaming gender and nutrition in FAO’s strategies related to the sustainable use, management and conservation of natural resources for food and agriculture. OCB works with other FAO’s divisions to ensure that countries and stakeholders respond to the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation, and keep the sustainability of natural resources high on the agenda.
Reporting Lines
The renewable energy Engineer will report to the Natural Resources Officer and work in collaboration with the Energy Team of OCB and assistants.
Technical Focus
The renewable energy engineer will provide technical assistance to the Organization by reviewing the designs (PV systems or biogas systems, mainly) used to prepare technical specifications for the procurement of renewable energy-related equipment for field activities submitted by FAO decentralized offices. In addition, based on possible needs, the engineer will be asked to support and prepare renewable energy equipment designs for selected projects in close consultation with the energy team. The expected outputs will include technical specifications, drawings, simulation files, and recommendations for construction and installation.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Review technical specifications for the solar PV electricity components of procurement requests, including viability of the proposed system, and the review the fulfilment of the installation requirements based on the data provided, proposed location(s) and target energy needs.
- Technically review the specifications for other electricity powered units (e.g. water pumps, freezers, cold rooms, ice block machines, etc).
- Prepare solar PV electricity system designs according to the locations and target energy demands. Provide estimations of capital costs, Operations and Maintenance (O&M) costs, and potential capital investment costs.
- Prepare technical specifications, drawings, simulation files, and recommendations for construction and installations of the designs.
- Support the market availability evaluation review of the selected equipment and provide recommendations on acceptable ranges for specifications.
