Egypt is a signatory State to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol, as well as the 1969 OAU Convention Governing Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa. In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding of 1954 concluded between UNHCR and the Government of Egypt, all activities pertaining to registration, documentation and refugee status determination are carried out by UNHCR. UNHCR in Egypt has Offices in Greater Cairo (6th October City and Zamalek district) as well as a Field Office in Alexandria.
In the UNHCR Operation in Egypt, the Registration Assistant is a member of the Registration team and is supervised by a more senior member of the team who normally reports directly to the Registration Officer. The Registration Assistant is responsible for supporting all activities related to registration, which may also include functions related to reception, filing and data management. The Registration Assistant responds to queries from, asylum seekers and refugees regarding UNHCR’s registration procedures and their rights and entitlements. The Registration Assistant liaises with protection staff and partners to ensure timely identification and referral of persons of concern for protection follow up. The Registration Assistant may provide interpretation and/or translation services in cases for which s/he has the required language competencies.
The Registration Officer will ensure that UNHCR's Registration Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are implemented in accordance with relevant UNHCR standards and policies, and all persons of concern have fair and transparent access to registration procedures. In that context, the Registration Assistant is supposed to conduct, i.e., the following activities:
· Conduct filing related activities including digitization of physical files.
· Assist with the reception and scheduling of individual cases for registration related activities.
· Conduct standard registration interviews and other enhanced interviews with complex cases as needed.
· Provide counselling to, and responds to queries from, asylum seekers and refugees regarding UNHCR's registration procedures and their rights and entitlements.
· Conduct admission, scheduling/appointment issuance activities
· Perform data clean-up as needed.
· Maintain accurate and up-to date records and data related to all individual registration cases.
· Identify persons with specific needs and ensure timely referral to protection follow-up as required.
· Identify cases with specific needs and/or urgent registration needs including unaccompanied children, cases with urgent medical needs and cases with urgent legal or physical protection needs.
· Refer cases to functional units in a timely manner, in accordance with their needs, and follow up on their further processing.
Perform other duties as needed.

Registration Assistant Organizational Setting and Work Relationships The Registration Assistant is a member of the registration team and is supervised by a more senior colleague who normally reports directly to the Registration Officer. The incumbent is responsible for supporting all activities related to registration, which may also include functions related to reception, filing and data management. S/he responds to queries from asylum seekers and refugees regarding UNHCR's registration procedures and their rights and entitlements.
