About Better Shelter

Better Shelter is a humanitarian nonprofit organization based in Sweden. They started as a small social enterprise in 2010, in partnership with UNHCR and the IKEA foundation, with a big mission dedicated to sheltering displaced persons with safety, dignity, and hope on their path towards a more stable life in a permanent home of their own.

Better Shelter develops, produces, distributes, and supports partners with shelter solutions that can be used as temporary shelters in humanitarian responses due to wars and natural disasters. They have delivered 77 000 shelters to 78 countries and improved the living conditions of more than 350,000 people. In the coming years, Better Shelter is set to develop a new product offering sustainable shelters that can adapt to climate, culture, and context, be safe and dignified while temporary, and minimize the environmental footprint. Learn more about Better Shelter here: www.bettershelter.org

About the role

You will be part of the product team and report to the Head of Product. Your main responsibilities will be to set, evaluate, test, and verify current and future product offerings’ technical performance and quality levels. You will write the product and part specifications, and you will be the one that knows the most about the technical requirements, possibilities, and limitations of Better Shelters products. You will need to set limitations and testing protocols on designed concepts and work together with internal and external designers/architects, product developers, and suppliers to evaluate different concepts. You will perform calculations and evaluation of performance on developed and existing products (or lead consultants). During the development process, you are likely to conduct risk analysis on the concepts and FMEAs. You will support the partnerships department and technical support services with the development or production of data and might be asked to provide technical training to partners.

As part of working with Better Shelter, you will operate in politically sensitive areas and travels might occasionally occur to exposed areas.  Better Shelter has a security policy in place as well as additional insurance and you may be offered external training (Hostile Environment Awareness Training).

Qualifications and experience

  • Master’s degree in structural engineering, building physics, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant working experience consisting of conducting calculations and technical evaluations (e.g. structural, load, thermal, fluid, energy transfer, etc.), setting up and executing product testing, using CAD, calculation software, and MS office
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English.

We expect you to be analytical as well as thorough. You should have excellent documenting skills (reports, protocols, etc.) as well as be hands-on and good at building prototypes. It is considered meritorious if you have experience in the humanitarian sector and are proficient in other languages (e.g. Ukrainian, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Urdu etc.).

About the employment

You will be directly hired by Better Shelter and the employment is full-time (100 %). You will be covered by a collective agreement that among other things states 30 days of vacation and additional health insurance. The position is on-site and you will be offered flexible working hours and international travel, sometimes to exposed areas, which is expected occasionally during the year. The starting date is as soon as possible, according to an agreement.
