Org. Setting and Reporting

These internship opportunities are available in the Civil Society Unit in the NGO Relations, Advocacy & Special Events Section, Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications (DGC). Its duties include connecting the UN with civil society organizations (CSOs) affiliated with DGC and assisting the department in disseminating information about the UN's activities. Through several programs, the Civil Society Unit collaborates with CSOs whose missions align with those of the United Nations. Within the unit, the Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS) is responsible for the Call for Participation among Civil Society Entities (not affiliated with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) who have expertise in the specific, substantive areas of UN conferences, meetings, and events. This exercise entails a multi-step process originating with the adoption of a General Assembly resolution or agreement that includes modalities for civil society participation in a UN high-level meeting or event:

This internship is offered for six months, candidates in-person. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Chief of the Civil Society Unit and Programme Manager of NGLS.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief in the Civil Society Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions as a Briefings, Chat Series, and Civil Society Youth Representatives Programme Intern:
• Assists in organizing the DGC Civil Society Unit Briefings, Chat Series, and Youth events online
• Assists in designing event flyers, save the date, and social media cards
• Assists in creating online RSVP forms
• Research focus groups (academia, NGOs, and other CSOs) for outreach and advocacy purposes
• Research possible speakers on set topics
• Work closely with DGC Civil Society Youth Representatives Steering Committee to plan virtual activities and events
• Review and compile information to support the work of the DGC Civil Society Youth Representatives Steering Committee
• Perform other duties as assigned

Under the supervision of the Chief in the Civil Society Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions as an Association Intern:
• Assist in researching civil society entities, including NGOs, who apply for formal association with DGC
• Compile documents submitted by NGO applicants
• Correspond with NGOs by email and phone on applications for association
• Create NGO profiles for review by the NGO Association team
• Provide a written summary of NGO applicant activities and social media accounts
• Assist in managing the database of NGO applications submitted for the association exercise
• Assist in organizing meetings of the DGC Committee on NGO Association
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Under the supervision of the Programme Manager in the Civil Society Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions as an NGLS Intern:
• Screen and review NGO registration applications for UN high-level meetings and events supported by NGLS
• Analyze and run data to generate NGO and meeting registration statistics
• Create infographics reports for the events
• Review and compile CSO stories for highlight on the CSU website
• Create social media cards and video content for the events and the CSU online platforms
• Monitor and respond to generic office emails
• Assist with NGLS Annual reports, event planning, and taking meeting notes
• Provide technical support during high-level meetings and events
• Perform other duties as required

Education

Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Applicants must also:
-Be computer literate in standard software applications
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
-Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
