The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environment sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing issues at the global and regional level.
The internship position is located in the UNEP/ Washington (RONA).
The internship is for a period of 6 months. It is unpaid and full-time. Interns will work five days (35-40 hours) per week under the supervision of the Chief Environmental Economist, RONA of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The intern will assist the Chief Environmental Economist with technical analysis including data mining on GDP Plus, Inclusive Wealth, Natural Capital and Human Capital.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
Under the supervision of the Chief Environmental Economist in RONA, the intern will:
- Attend events/meetings/seminars and provide in-depth insights about the results through writing, editing and statistical analysis.
- Draft and update online content for the web portal and social media networks including preparing engaging entries for social media platforms.
- Provide assistance in presentations, event concept notes, flyers and infographics.
- Research and monitor a wide range of UN developments on Green Transition, SDGs, Triple Planetary Crisis.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme in Economics, international relations, analytics or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
b. be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in Economics, information technology, political science, international relations, analytics or related field (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or
c. have graduated with a university degree in Economics, information technology, political science, international relations, analytics or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
