Our team and mission

The Space Medicine Team (SMT) is based at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany. The primary objective of the SMT is to maximise the operational effectiveness of ESA astronauts by managing their physical, social and mental health throughout their careers. These services are delivered through a combination of SMT support staff specialist knowledge, the use of medical hardware and software, and the continuous evaluation of effectiveness and best practice, in addition to operationally driven research and technology development performed in collaboration with Agency and/or academic partners. Currently all ESA astronauts fly to the International Space Station (ISS); however, the SMT is preparing for missions beyond low-Earth orbit (LEO), including to the Lunar Gateway and the lunar surface.

You are encouraged to visit the ESA website: http://www.esa.int

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

SMT is currently developing an Exploration Medical System (ExMS) concept for the Artemis missions. The system is based on a central data management hub that integrates plug-and-play medical modules to provide a scalable medical system that is vehicle-independent and can adapt to different mission scenarios and evolving mission needs.

To prepare, evaluate and demonstrate the validity of the ExMS concept, SMT has initiated the first steps in the development of an Exploration Medical System facility. In this facility, new integration concepts and capabilities will be developed and tested to identify and resolve integration issues and develop optimal solutions for the final design. It is also envisaged that the facility will serve as the precursor to a forthcoming Exploration Medical System simulator that will be used for user training and further development of the system as missions progress.

As a Young Graduate Trainee you will:

  • develop proof-of-concept activities to demonstrate the best integration approaches for current and newly identified medical modules of the ExMS;
  • develop the required IT infrastructure to enable testing and simulation;
  • develop the required test infrastructure to validate the developed integration concepts;
  • develop a first test and simulation environment to enable training on the ExMS.
