JOB PURPOSE
The Racial Justice team inspires, engages and supports the Amnesty Movement to challenge systemic oppressions and fight discrimination. The team pushes for innovative and impactful research through participatory approaches, litigation challenging the boundaries of the law and people powered campaigns to amplify local struggles, so it protects all people and communities. This team develops strategies focused on delivering positive and concrete change. The team develops policy, research, capacity building tools and provides advice and advocacy. The team coordinates and works with relevant IS staff and AI Networks to ensure the application of policies and standards in these areas, and provides advice and support to the research, campaign and advocacy of regional teams and sections.
The Program's mission is to contribute to Equality and Intersectional Justice, working globally with partners and communities standing for Gender Justice, Racial Justice, Migrants and Refugees & Human Rights Defenders: Disrupting Power, Smashing Oppressions!
ABOUT YOU
As an experienced researcher, you will have knowledge of international human rights law and the ability to think strategically to develop policy positions on issues of racial justice from an intersectional perspective. With excellent written and spoken English, you will have experience producing reports and other documents, all while promoting human rights and racial justice.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead on research, collaborating with regional offices, national sections, and national and local partner organisations to develop this new area of research to advance the movement's racial justice work, in line with Amnesty's global strategy, and the team's vision for racial justice.
- Support colleagues on field research missions, contributing specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of racial justice concerns, including in response to crisis and rapidly changing situations.
- Provide expert legal and policy advice on racial justice and human rights to AI staff carrying out research, campaigns and human rights education on racial justice issues, supporting collaborative, progressive and impactful work in this area.
- Review, from a legal and policy perspective, draft reports and other outputs from colleagues within the Amnesty movement on racial justice and human rights related concerns, to support quality outputs that include consistent, expert and progressive human rights analysis.
- Write or contribute to the drafting of timely and effective reports, briefings, position papers, correspondence, action materials, press releases, and other internal and external documents in order to implement Amnesty's strategies on racial justice and discrimination from an intersectional perspective.
- Develop and coordinate the implementation of specific advocacy initiatives, contribute to campaigning strategies, and manage specific sub-projects within the framework of agreed strategies for the team, programme, the IS and the movement. This may include coordination of project teams and supervision of consultants.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Specialist knowledge of the international human rights legal framework related to racial justice.
- Experience and good understanding of refugee and migrants´ rights is desirable. However, the post holder will work with experts on these issues.
- Experience of working from an intersectional perspective /undertaking human rights work at the intersection of race, gender, and other forms of discrimination – such as on the grounds of disability, descent/caste and/or familiarity with a range of racial justice and feminist perspectives and approaches from multiple country and regional contexts.
- Proven experience undertaking high-quality research, human rights analysis and drafting written outputs.
- Ability to present ideas clearly, and advance compelling arguments in English (essential) and at least one other relevant language (highly desirable).
- Significant experience of interviewing and engaging in an ethical, respectful and compassionate manner with witnesses and survivors of human rights violations, as well as with senior government officials, policy makers, and law enforcement officials.
