Terms of Reference

Organizational context

UNHCR’s Division of External Relations (DER) is responsible for global communications and advocacy, partnerships and coordination with civil society, NGOs, and UN agencies; partnerships with government; partnerships with private sector; and the organization’s records and archives. The DER Global Campaigns Hub develops integrated campaigns around strategic priorities that aim to protect people forced to flee. Integrated campaigns aim to influence government policy on behalf of forcibly displaced. Additionally, raising the profile of UNHCR and its work, also ensures building UNHCR’s brand as the leading humanitarian organization protecting people forced to flee.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a dynamic person who is an excellent communicator and has a good understanding of the UN system and humanitarian issues, and/or external relations. The incumbent will report to the Chief of Global Campaigns. The ideal post-holder will be comfortable working in a fast-paced and reactive environment, have the skills and ability to support a small team on creating content, internal communications, presentations, and reports and have excellent skills in Microsoft Office.

Key responsibilities will include:

Development and execution of the GCH internal comms plan (50% time):

• In close coordination with the GCH communication specialist, and supervised by the Chief of Campaigns Section, lead on the development and execution of a cohesive GCH internal communication plan.
• As part of the plan, assist the GCH with internal communication around two global campaigns, including leading the creation and management of campaign content on the intranet, the division’s SharePoint and drafting all-staff emails.

Assist with other priority projects (25% time):

• Assist in the development of core portfolio documents.
• Help produce communications toolkits.
• Help produce content for key moments and events.
• Lead on coordinating the translation of core communications materials.
• Assist with campaign impact analysis.
• Collate comments and feedback received from internal and external stakeholders.

Assist the GCH with the day-to-day management: (25% of time):

• Assist in the planning of workshops, trainings, and other meetings.
• Prepare meeting minutes, briefings, talking points and other information packages.
• Assist in scheduling meetings as needed.
• Draft, edit, and revise internal and external documents, PPTs, and other material.
• Serve as a focal point for archiving key content.
• Undertake any other tasks assigned.

Eligibility

To be considered for an internship, candidates must:

• be a recent graduate* or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO;
• have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to, or of interest to, the work of the organization; and
• not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application.

*Recent graduates are considered to be candidates who completed their studies within two years of applying for an internship with UNHCR.

Other qualifications

• The candidate must be interested in communication, campaigning, and external relations work.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Location

The successful candidate will be based with in Geneva. However, remote work is also a possibility.

Conditions

The internship is for six months, and the start date is 01 March 2023. It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).

Allowance:

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party but will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, and local transportation.
