OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
As a specialized Category 1 Institute, the International Bureau of Education (IBE) is an integral part of UNESCO. It is the International Centre of Excellence in Curriculum and Learning and is valued for its specialist knowledge, expertise and networks, and for providing curriculum support services that include up-to-date, evidence-based information and technical assistance to UNESCO Member States. The IBE offers strategic advice, technical assistance tailored to specific country needs, short and long term capacity-building opportunities, and provides access to cutting edge knowledge in the field of curriculum and learning.
Within the framework of the Curriculum Support Services and capacity development to Member States (SSMS), the incumbent will be in charge of the implementation curriculum related activities.
The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Director of the IBE. He/She will:
Long Description- Make technical contributions to the Director for the UNESCO-IBE strategic orientations and positioning, especially regarding the International Geneva.
- Identify potential partners and donors and propose fundraising strategies.
- Identify promising themes based on UNESCO-IBE flagships and elaborate projects that will be proposed to partners.
- Identify countries engaged in project design processes to be submitted to donors and supervise the elaboration of UNESCO-IBE's technical and financial offers.
- Provide technical support to the activities supervised by the Head of the Technical Assistance Unit, particularly regarding Portuguese-speaking countries.
- Act as an expert trainer in the training activities of national executives on curriculum and other related issues in Mali, Burkina Faso, South Sudan, the Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), Guinea-Bissau, and also in Portuguese-speaking countries.
- Contribute to the formulation of Programs and Projects for Chad and provide technical support for the implementation of UNESCO-IBE activities in the country.
- Provide technical support in the implementation of IBE activities financed by German funds.
- Perform any other task requested by his/her supervisor that contributes to the achievement of the pre-identified objectives.
- Advanced University Degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Education, Curriculum, Learning or Pedagogy.
Work Experience
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible relevant experience in education development, of which preferably 3 years acquired at international level, including experience in education reforms.
- Solid experience in conducting research and impacting education practice from an international perspective.
- Solid experience in supporting countries in implementing curriculum renewal, design and development processes.
- Excellent knowledge and technical expertise in curriculum-related issues and education policy reforms.
- Excellent analytical and research skills.
- Excellent project management skills and ability to coordinate complex projects.
- Ability to lead, manage and motivate staff and teams and to maintain effective working relationships in a multicultural environment.
- Ability to build, maintain and enhance working relations with national/local authorities, cultural institutions and relevant intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.
- Ability to participate effectively in high-level negotiations with internal and external partners.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Strong IT skills, including knowledge of MS software (Word, Excel etc.).
Languages
- Excellent knowledge of French (oral and written) and good knowledge of English.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Work Experience
- Experience in working with UN partners, including UNESCO National Commissions, Ministries of Education, UN agencies, inter-governmental organizations, development banks, teacher education and higher education institutions, and civil society organizations on similar teacher education reform projects.
Skills and competencies
- Knowledge of UNESCO’s education conventions and global priorities and UN administrative procedures.
Languages
- Knowledge of Portuguese will be an asset.
- Knowledge of another official language of UNESCO (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and/or Spanish).

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.
The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 137,099.00 US $.
