The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support, and oversight of the security management system to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the security programs and activities of the United Nations System. The advertised post is in Addis Ababa; the incumbent reports to the UNDSS Chief Security Adviser, Ethiopia.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Advises and provides guidance to the CSAs/SAs/ with regards to Regional and Country specific threats affecting the United Nations.
  2. Develops and coordinates security threat information requirements, acquisition, examination, collation, analysis, and dissemination of security threat information to relevant clients.
  3. Conducts strategic security threat information liaison visits (SSTILV) to determine if the security threat information management system is functioning properly and in compliance with established Security Analysis Process and Practice Standards.
  4. Participates in development of procedures of security operations, contributing with preparation and review of briefs for UN and other key decision makers on current/significant security-related events in the designated region.
  5. Provides briefing materials such as periodic security threat information alerts, notices, warnings, and advisories on security for DSS senior management and Designated Officials on security threats.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities: Supervises a team of National Staff and International Security Officers within the Information Cell.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Master's degree or equivalent degree in security, political, military, international relations, or related field, or
  • Bachelor's Degree in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Minimum 5 years (master’s degree) or 7 years (bachelor's degree) of progressively responsible experience in security, risk or disaster or emergency management in the public or private service areas, such as national security, military or police, or in a corporate environment is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in security, humanitarian or political information analysis is required.
  • At least six months of international experience in support of humanitarian operations is required.
  • UNDSS certification in any of the following is an asset: Security Certification Programme, Security Analysis Process and Practice, Hostage Incident Management.

Language requirements

  • Proficiency in oral and written English 
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
