Duties and Responsibilities

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats. Numerous additional intergovernmental instruments on migratory species conservation have been adopted under the broad umbrella of CMS which are supported by the CMS Secretariat. In addition, two regional agreements on migratory species adopted under CMS have their own Secretariats which are co-located with the CMS Secretariat in Bonn - the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the Agreement on the Conservation of European Populations of Bats (EUROBATS).

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. In the present context, UNEP provides the administrative functions for the CMS, AEWA and EUROBATS Secretariats. This post is located in the CMS Secretariat at the Bonn duty station in Germany.

The individual contractor will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Coordinator of the Information Management, Communications and Awareness-raising Unit (IMCA) and the overall supervision of the CMS Executive Secretary.

The individual contractor will be responsible for performing the following duties, as required:

1. Proofreading and editing of official documents

• Support the substantive staff and the documentation team in charge of preparing the pre-session and in-session documents for CMS meetings including the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties, the 6th meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council and the 54th meeting of the Standing Committee, to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice. UN, UNEP and CMS terminology and style must be followed.
• Verify the terminology and accuracy of quotations reproduced.
• Edit and proofread English language written outreach materials for the CMS Secretariat as required before their public release.

2. Written content production
• Draft high-quality text in English for communications purposes, including articles for the website and statements of the Executive Secretary.
• Ensure that the language and writing style of all documents and communication products are consistent and appropriate for their intended audience(s);
• Carry out more extensive editing of documents prepared by other CMS staff members where required, including rewriting and restructuring texts for greater readability and better logical sequence. Propose language changes with a view to simplify technical language, eliminate jargon, repetition and overly complicated sentences.

3. Report Writing

• Provide report writing services in English for specific CMS meetings as approved by the CMS Executive Secretary and ensure timely delivery of draft meeting reports.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in linguistics, languages, communications sciences or related field. A first-level university in combination with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
At least 4 years of working experience in the area of document drafting, report writing, editing, or proofreading. Excellence in English grammar, with great attention to details and accuracy are required. Knowledge of terminology used in the UN, UNEP and CMS is desired. Experience with writing for communications purposes is desired. Experience in a field related to the environment, sustainable development or biodiversity conservation is desired. Experience with editorial practices and documentation procedures of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEA) or comparable international organizations is desired.

Languages

English, French and Spanish are the working languages of the CMS Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
