About IRRI
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
Job Purpose

Climate Change impacts rice production through exacerbated and more frequent climate extremes, rising sea levels and temperatures. Understanding future trends is crucial to plan ahead and implement adaptation options to increase resilience of agricultural systems. Working with various national and international partners in different projects, IRRI develops strategies to mitigate climate change (effects) and to adapt to climate change, e.g. through the development and dissemination of climate-smart technologies in rice production.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and is open for international applications.

Roles and Responsibilities

The incumbent will become a member of a newly formed research team on crop and greenhouse gas research to address the challenges of climate change. The focus of his/her work will be specifically on the following key areas and responsibilities:

  • Conducting field experiments on GHG emissions using advanced analytical technologies
  • Data evaluation incl. QA/QC from raw data to comprehensive data formats to be used (by GHG modeling experts) in simulation models
  • Contribution to the various aspects of the project design and implementation, e.g. field layout and measurement protocols, data collection, output formats etc.
  • Assessing convergence between the newly developed models and existing GHG calculation tools used in GHG inventories and mitigation projects for possible iteration of model versions
  • Advising on targeted project outputs for improving Measurement, Reporting, Verification and towards new applicable mitigation options
  • Be a member of integrated, multi-cultural project teams at IRRI on climate-smart mitigation and adaptation R&D on rice;
  • Contribute to international communities of practice on GHG research (e.g. within the OneCGIAR);
  • Contribute to developing relevant strategic partnerships (ranging from advanced research institutes to NARES partners), knowledge sharing, and capacity development of partners and stakeholders;
  • Supervise students, interns, technicians and national research staff;
  • Demonstrate scientific leadership through publications and representing IRRI in scientific and strategy forums
  • Well-documented field measurements and timely delivery of data
  • Adhering to reporting commitments on field measurements as required for annual and final project reports
  • Continuous feedback on the overall progress and outputs of the project from the perspective of MRV of mitigation projects
  • Interact with other IRRI working groups on possible projects on GHG mitigation by advising on technical MRV aspects
  • Articles in peer-reviewed journals, proceedings as well as technical manuals and training materials on field measurements
Qualifications
  • PhD in agricultural, environmental (climate change) sciences
Skills Required

Mandatory

  • Good understanding of GHG emissions and mitigation in rice production systems from mechanistic level to the available database on empirical evidence;
  • Good understanding and practical experience in agronomic research on water, fertilizer and residue management in rice production systems;
  • Experience in GHG field sampling and lab analysis;
  • Good skills in data analysis and evaluation of GHG field measurements;
  • Proficiency in using GHG calculation tools for crop production;
  • Good understanding of technical issues in climate change policy (IPCC guidelines, methodologies for voluntary carbon trading etc.);
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, be a good team player;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

Preferred

  • Experience with Measurement, Verification, Reporting in mitigation projects
  • Basic understanding of simulation models
  • Experience in intercultural working environments
