Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries, while strengthening the capabilities of governments and the private sector in those countries to create and sustain high-quality health systems that can succeed without our assistance. For more information, please visit: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org.

One billion people worldwide are living with disabilities. People with disabilities often have higher needs but face greater challenges in accessing health services due to financial, informational, attitudinal, and logistical barriers. As a result, their health outcomes are poorer. For example, a disabled person is 2x more likely to be HIV-positive than the general population. And a child with a disability is 5x more likely to be malnourished. The exclusion of disability in health service planning has been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic and left persons with disabilities in many countries exposed to devastating consequences. Healthcare must be more inclusive to achieve global targets such as Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goals. Provision of inclusive services and reaching marginalized groups are also crucial to achieving disease specific goals such as the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets by 2030.

CHAI programs are reaching millions of people with lifechanging services around the world every year. Ensuring that people with disabilities have equitable access to these services is imperative. To understand better where we can improve our work to reach people with disabilities, we seek to conduct a CHAI wide assessment on disability inclusion. We want to map how our programs interconnect with disabilities. This could involve diseases that cause disabilities or programs that target people with disabilities as a key population. We also want to map relevant government priorities across our program countries and identify critical gaps and opportunities to strengthen inclusion. We will also assess inclusion as an employer. This assessment will guide the development of an action plan to present to CHAI Leadership.

Position Overview

CHAI will hire a consultant to support this assessment. As Associate Disability Inclusion, you will work with the consultant to implement this work. You will support data collection, for example by acquiring relevant policies or data, and coordinating meetings with CHAI program and country leaders. You will gather inputs and identify areas for improvement. The assessment will evaluate disability-inclusion in our programs as well as from an employer standpoint. Once the assessment is completed, you will coordinate a series of stakeholder meetings to validate the report and develop an action plan with priority interventions. You will lead the development of this plan, as well as the prioritization of interventions. You will also identify what is needed to implement these interventions. As part of this overall process, you will develop information and education materials to build the organization’s capacity on disabilities. You may also organize events, for example at the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons. You will engage with other global health organizations to gather best practices to inform CHAI’s future work. Once priorities are identified, you will assist with its implementation. This may involve developing or reviewing concept notes, as well as engaging with sector partners and donors. You will also develop a framework for monitoring progress at CHAI.
