Brief description of WFP Innovation Accelerator, INKA:

 

 

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency fighting hunger. WFP reaches more than 100 million people every day - delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with smallholder farmers, communities, and governments to improve nutrition and build resilience.

 

The WFP Innovation Accelerator was named by Fast Company as Most Innovative Non-Profit Organization 2021 for its work in identifying, nurturing, and scaling disruptive start-ups and innovations to end global hunger. Based in Munich, Germany, the Innovation Accelerator provides WFP employees and start-ups with funding, hands-on support, and access to WFP’s global operations. Through the Accelerator, WFP is leveraging unprecedented advances in digital innovation - such as mobile technology, artificial intelligence, and blockchain - and new business models to transform the way it serves vulnerable communities across the world. In 2021, Accelerator supported innovations that positively impacted the lives of 9 million people globally. Most recently, the Accelerator runs programs for external partners such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and others.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

 

The incumbent, reporting to the Head of Partnerships and Performance, and is expected to:

 

1. With a focus on growing our innovation partnerships ecosystem (particularly our North American, Asian and DACH ecosystem portfolios), contribute to and support a growing portfolio of private sector, innovation, and other influential partnerships:

  • Proactively contribute to the partnerships portfolio, including partner profiling and outreach activities, with the aim to maximize resources and leverage policy and technical support;
  • Collect inputs, including operational innovation updates, from within the Innovation Accelerator and other WFP entities to be used partner updates on WFP’s innovation offering;
  • Draft quality briefs and proactively highlight issues to senior staff to inform best course of action and nurture partnership growth; 
  • Support innovation partnerships strategies; compile information to create quality partner proposals and reports while engaging within the Innovation Accelerator and with other WFP stakeholders, as applicable;
  • Draft donor-targeted communications including proposals, concept notes, presentation decks and reports to support resource mobilization efforts;
  • Prepare for and support negotiations for contributions and partnership agreements, in line with internal policies and external regulations, to reach advantageous outcomes for WFP and its work in innovation.

 

2. Support other partnerships, communications and events needs as required.

  • Assist the Head of Innovation Accelerator, as well as Director of Innovation and Knowledge Management with other activities as required;
  • Execute any other task required to support the activities of the Innovation Accelerator;
  • Support other core processes of the Innovation Accelerator (e.g. innovation sourcing; innovation bootcamps; sprint programme; thought leadership; scale-up enablement; innovation services; knowledge management) as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree; a degree in business, communications or international development preferred.

Experience: Minimum two years of relevant professional work experience in partnership roles. Experience in innovation and knowledge management is beneficial.

Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is a must. Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) and/or German is a plus.

REQUIRED SKILLS | WFP COMPETENCIES

 

  • Experience in partnerships, fundraising, external relations or reporting within a global organization required.
  • Conceptual thinking to create relevant external-facing partnerships materials, for projects and activities with innovative elements.
  • Ability to produce accurate, high-quality written materials, including graphically based PowerPoint presentations as well as text documents for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to interact with external audiences with maturity and tact.
  • Interest in technology innovations (e.g. mobile apps, blockchain, artificial intelligence) and business model innovations (e.g. innovative finance, sharing economy).
  • Experience working cross-functionally and getting things done in a scrappy and hands-on way.
  • Worked in a large-scale organization or with a client/in partnership with a large-scale organization.
  • Ability to interact with external audiences with maturity and tact.
  • Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy.
  • Time management skills with an ability to plan, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and able to ask for help and guidance, while also making efforts to solve problems.
  • Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme.
