Overview

Jhpiego is a non-profit organization, operating in Lesotho since 2012 through supporting the government of Lesotho in delivering health services to the Basotho people. Jhpiego’s portfolio currently focuses on HIV/TB and COVID epidemic response, and includes a range of HIV and COVID focused programming and research efforts including Khanya (VMMC and PrEP), Thebe (TB Contact Tracing and COVID Response), RISE (COVID Case Management and Vaccine Support), MOSAIC (biomedical HIV prevention including Dapivirine Ring Introduction), CUT-TB (RCT) and various other small studies.

Under the supervision of the MOSAIC Project Director, the Deputy Project Director will lead biomedical HIV prevention research activities including data collection, analysis and report writing. He/she will also support programmatic and technical integrity of the MOSAIC project in Lesotho.

The position is based in Maseru. 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the MOSAIC global, regional, and Lesotho-based research team in planning for implementation studies
  • Ensure submission of applications for IRB approval
  • Ensure sound data management procedures
  • Coordinate the recruitment, training and supervision of data collectors and data entry clerks
  • Consult with co-investigators on appropriate management of participant problems and concerns.
  • Ensure research objectives are met within stipulated timelines
  • Participate in writing and editing of technical reports and manuscripts for publication or presentation
  • Work with the Research Utilization / Knowledge Management / Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor (RU/KM/MEL Advisor)  and other project staff to develop M&E frameworks and effectively track data/results, and to promote research utilization and integration of MOSAIC study findings
  • Present progress, achievements and lessons learned to the donor and key stakeholders
  • Maintain strong working relationships with the Lesotho MOH, DHMTs, as well as implementing partners, private sector partners and other key stakeholders to maximize resources and avoid duplication of effort
  • Contribute to the design, analysis, and synthesis of MOSAIC interventions across project workstreams including implementation research, program and policy support, demand generation, and local partner engagement
  • Participate in work planning process in close collaboration with the MOSAIC project leadership, MOH, project team and project partners
  • Participate in relevant MOSAIC technical advisory groups with counterparts and partner institutions
  • Participate in relevant technical working groups in Lesotho
  • Mentor, support, supervise a small team and align their efforts to ensure rapid and sustainable results
  • Work with the Project Director and finance department to track project budgets

Required Qualifications

 

  • Master’s degree in public health, demography, social sciences, development studies or related fields
  • 5+ years of experience working in research field, public health experience with a focus on HIV prevention is an added advantage
  • Proven knowledge of data collection methods
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and statistical applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, fluency in English
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to write research reports for publication
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices
  • Ability to work with and coordinate a team
