Research Assistant - Transparency, Reproducibility, and Ethical Evidence
1. Background
The International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) promotes evidence-informed equitable, inclusive and sustainable development. We support the generation and effective use of high-quality evidence to inform decision-making and improve the lives of people living in poverty in low- and middle-income countries (L&MICs). We provide guidance and support to produce impact evaluations and associated formative evaluations; systematic reviews and syntheses, evidence gap maps and support for using that evidence in decision-making and capacity development. Our work encompasses a wide range of topics, sectors and themes, including but not limited to health, nutrition, education, agriculture, governance, microfinance, climate change, humanitarian interventions, and social protection. 3ie is registered as a non- governmental organization in the United States. It has offices in New Delhi, London and Washington, DC.
3ie is inviting applications for the post of Research Assistant as part of the Transparency, Reproducibility, and Ethical Evidence (TREE) initiative. This position will be remote, we prefer the candidate to be based in India, we are open to hire exceptional candidates based in the UK and USA. The candidate should be willing to maintain core hours conducive to working with colleagues in London, Delhi, and Washington DC.
2. Key responsibilities
The research assistant will support activities under 3ie’s TREE initiative including but not limited to TREE Review Framework, Push Button Replications, RIDIE, survey methods etc. The assistant may also support impact evaluation and synthesis related research. The responsibilities of the research assistant include, though not are restricted to the following:
2.1 Contributing to research and evaluation
- Research support for evaluation projects, including data analysis and management, statistical and econometric analysis, coding, preparation of tables, graphs and figures, literature reviews and others.
- Support capacity-building, and engagement activities.
- Analyze and summarize the results from baseline and final reports of impact evaluation studies.
- Liaise with project partners to ensure regular communication with all stakeholders.
- Contribute to developing questionnaires and databases.
- Support quantitative and qualitative data collection and quality assurance activities.
- Support implementation of Transparency, Reproducibility and Ethical best practices in research.
- Prepare presentations.
- Perform replication analysis as part of quality assurance of the grant programs. Contribute to writing outputs such as project briefs, minutes from meetings and learning documents.
- Search and analyse relevant articles, working papers and blog posts that can contribute to the analysis of the impact evaluations done in the windows; and Conduct research for fundraising.
- Prepare material for 3ie program web pages.
2.2 Project and grant management support
- Support staff in project and grant administration and management, including preparation of workplans, donor reports, invoices, budgets, risk identification and mitigation.
- Maintain project progress tracking tools, and ensure deliverables are completed on time, within budget.
- Assist with formatting and proofing program documents (e.g., RFPs, RFQs, announcements, review forms and so on).
- Help organize program events, such as selection panel meetings, advisory group meetings, program-sponsored conference sessions, program workshops (e.g., matchmaking, inception, pre-completion).
- Maintain tracking sheet with the status and key information of all grants, including proposals, budgets, and deliverables.
- Liaise with researchers and implementing partners, as required.
The position includes opportunities for professional development, such as relevant courses or collaborative research with leading impact evaluation experts, generally conditional upon the research assistant’s initiative in finding and/or creating such opportunities, and/or participating in impact evaluations and synthesis projects being undertaken internally.
3. Qualifications, experience, and skills
3.1 Education and work experience
- A master’s degree preferably in Economics, Social Sciences, Development Studies or related fields and minimum of one year of experience in the development sector.
- Knowledge of international development policies and programs.
- Those with experience in data quality assurance, survey methods, research ethics, study registry, and computational reproducibility will be preferred.
3.2 Skills
- Experience conducting quantitative analysis, particularly econometric techniques.
- Strong data analysis and statistical programming skills using STATA. Experience of collecting primary data, managing field surveys, and implementing quality assurance mechanisms.
- Demonstrable analytical abilities and proficiency in English.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across geographies.
- High level of personal motivation and excellent work ethic.
- Ability to work in multi-stakeholder settings and demonstrated ability to deliver under pressure with strict deadlines.
4. Eligibility
We will recruit one individual, preferably with the right to work in India. We may consider exceptional candidates who are based in the UK and USA, having valid work authorization and willing to work remotely from their home country, while maintaining core hours conducive to working with colleagues in London, Delhi, and Washington DC.
