Overview
Maternal Newborn Health (MNH) Technical Advisor will support technical writing across the MNH team to create technical reports/briefs on research findings, conduct literature reviews of current evidence, compile and/or develop intervention-related toolkits and materials, develop research protocols, and contribute to manuscript development. The position will work collaboratively across TLI with the other technical units (e.g., family planning, quality improvement, innovations, health systems strengthening, community, and gender, and adolescent and youth health).
Jhpiego’s Technical Leadership and Innovation (TLI) office drives impact across Jhpiego’s core areas of work in women’s health (MNH, reproductive health and family planning, and women’s cancers), infectious disease (HIV/AIDS, Malaria, COVID response/global health security), and health systems strengthening, primary health care, immunization, and safe surgery. This dynamic team of technical leaders provides “best in class” technical leadership and support responsive to country needs and in pursuit of accelerated impact.
Jhpiego’s Maternal and Newborn Health team sits within the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent (RMNCAH) division within TLI. The MNH team is a diverse group of clinical and program experts with deep experience in technical leadership and collaborative health system support in low-, middle-, and high-income countries across five continents, including fragile and conflict areas. Our team values and prioritizes collaboration with our field-based colleagues and local stakeholders, recognizing the critical importance of health system factors and quality of care in the success of interventions and sustained improvements. We are actively engaged in a wide range of global technical leadership, technical support to country programs, and implementation research across the continuum of care.
Responsibilities
Technical Assistance & Quality Programming
- Lead technical writing and editing of MNH products (e.g., implementation research protocols, job aids, toolkits, presentations, abstracts, manuscripts, program reports, and technical reports/briefs)
- Support the documentation of program and research results for submission to international conferences and peer-reviewed journals and publications
- Collaborate with key MNH global partners including WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, FIGO, and ICM in the development of materials, evidence briefs, and other strategic guidance
- Work closely with in-country research partners and country teams to draft research protocols and prepare applications to Institutional Review Boards (IRB) for ethical approval of research studies.
- Coordinate development of evidence-based, methodologically-sound clinical training materials and standards and other materials needed for program implementation
- Foster relationships with global and country-based technical and program staff to identify and address implementation challenges and assure quality programming
- Contribute to the development of technical products, training and other materials to support project implementation
- Analyses program data, as requested, to identify opportunities to strengthen quality of implementation, identify trends and recommend strategies to address implementation challenges
- Builds capacity within projects to implement best practices and assure quality implementation.
Global Strategy Development & Implementation
- Support uptake of new MNH approaches in Jhpiego country programs with strategic program guidance and materials development.
New Program Development & Donor Relations
- Contribute to the writing and review of new proposals for the MNH unit
- Provides support and input to the development of external communication priorities including success stories, blogs and other program and technical related communication materials that demonstrate Jhpiego’s technical expertise, results and programming excellence.
Knowledge Management & Learning
- Contributes to organizational-wide technical updates to ensure staff possess excellent knowledge of technical area, global strategies and practices / approaches
- Organizes and facilitates peer-learning, virtual learning and convenings to share technical updates and knowledge.
- Ensures technical knowledge, lessons learned and best practices are shared with staff globally, and that existing knowledge is leveraged in planning, decision-making and providing technical assistance
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in public health or related field
- 5 years’ technical experience supporting, implementing and/or managing international field based MNH programs
- Demonstrated technical writing and editing experience
- Awareness of, sensitivity to, and experience in working in multiple socio-economic settings and with multi-cultural staff and groups
- Ability to develop productive working relationships with counterparts in other agencies and organizations worldwide
- Proven ability to multi-task
- Excellent skills in facilitation, teamwork, and coordination
- Ability to travel internationally as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with implementation research, human subject research and health services research
- Lived and worked in one or more low- or middle-income countries
- Fluency in French, Portuguese, Arabic, and/or Spanish
- Clinical background and experience.
The salary range for this role is expected to be: $64,237 - $85,649.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
