BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises by helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC works in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to help people to survive, reclaim control of their future, and strengthen their communities.
SCOPE OF WORK: IRC San Diego has been providing Youth Programs in San Diego County since 1996, helping more than 300 refugee youths to stay in school, graduate, and smoothly transition to college or a career. The Youth Department is dedicated to supporting newly arrived refugee/immigrant youths across multiple school sites by helping them process potential trauma and acculturation stress, while also enhancing their language acquisition.
Empower refugee middle school youth to improve their English language and Social Emotional Learning Skills through one-on-one reading sessions, engaging small group activities, and enriching field trips, enabling them to foster crucial skills while having fun!
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Youth Empowerment and Success Internship offers a unique opportunity to work with Middle School Youth and facilitate a one-month Summer Academy that focuses on enhancing Social-Emotional Learning and English Language Development Skills. The program will take place at Greenfield Middle School, where interns will be responsible for supporting program implementation, facilitating small group reading and SEL lessons, conducting student outreach, providing program support, working 1:1 with students, as well as providing administrative support and assistance with twice weekly field trips across San Diego County.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
All youth program work is focused on the development of social emotional assets in the areas of Brain Building, Emotion Regulation, Positive Social Skills, Conflict Resolution and Perseverance. YES Interns will learn how to facilitate programming in a trauma informed, culturally responsive manner; and learn how to cultivate an equitable, welcoming environment.
Intern will learn how to facilitate engaging Social Emotional Learning and English Language Learning activities for middle school students using trauma-informed and culturally/linguistically responsive practices.

Intern will increase their professional skillset and network with IRC staff.
