BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This project addresses the severe threats that natural disasters are posing to the transmission and viability of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in five Small Island Developing States in the Caribbean and the Pacific. It aims to integrate the safeguarding of this heritage into disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies, helping communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies through a tailored capacity-building approach. As a result, communities will become more resilient and countries will dispose of and utilize contextualized approaches to connect living heritage and DRR, benefit from stronger awareness and (inter-sectoral) 2 cooperation. Actions will include (i) conducting community-based needs assessments and related training and field activities, (ii) establishing relevant national mechanisms and strategies through multi-stakeholder consultations and advisory services, and (iii) strengthening intra- and inter-country cooperation through information exchange and networking of actors engaged in safeguarding living heritage and in DRR. The project is the first of its kind to operationalize the Operational principles and modalities for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in emergencies, recently adopted by the General Assembly of States Parties to the 2003 Convention (Resolution 8.GA 9).

The activity will be implemented in Fiji, Tonga and Vanuatu.
