POSITION SUMMARY:
HIAS seeks an Institutional Development Manager to support the Institutional Development team to increase funding and diversify revenue streams for U.S. resettlement, integration and asylum services. They will help produce high quality concept notes, proposals and reports for a range of public and private institutional donors, building on HIAS’ comparative global and local programs.
This position works closely with the U.S. Legal Services and Programs teams, maintaining regular engagement with and knowledge of programs, including HIAS’ Border & Asylum Network, pro bono partnerships, legal services, and economic and social integration activities, among others. The position will also support proposals for the Operations and Global Public Affairs divisions as needed. The Institutional Development Manager will also help identify and develop new and existing partnerships with private, corporate and Jewish funders through strategic planning and research on new US-based donors that are aligned with HIAS’ mission and core programming.
They report directly to the Director, Institutional Development and work closely with the Institutional Development team, to support and expand national partnerships with foundations, corporations and other new funding prospects for HIAS. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated and experienced professional with excellent skills in writing, project management and communications.
Note, this position is based at our headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland or our office in New York, New York, and we will consider a remote option for applicants who live outside of commuting distance to either of our offices and are based in other states in which we are registered (Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supports the development of high-quality proposals, concept notes and other materials for institutional funders, working closely with the programs and finance teams on project design, ensuring clarity, consistency and a compelling case for funding, and adhering to donor/HIAS guidelines and policies.
- Synthesizes HIAS’ programs and interventions into clear, compelling presentations, proposals and reports for current and new donors.
- Conducts outreach to and participates in meetings with new and potential donors, especially foundations and corporations, to help cultivate strong relationships and identify new funding opportunities.
- Conducts research and maintains ongoing familiarity of specific funding and partnership opportunities with donors and corporations that align with HIAS’ priorities in U.S. resettlement, integration, asylum and legal services, and HIAS’ global signature approaches: legal aid, community-based mental health and psychosocial support services, economic inclusion and prevention/response to gender-based violence.
- Identifies opportunities for and supports the development of strategic communications (e.g., blog posts, social media, articles, webinars, etc.) to increase the profile and visibility of HIAS’ programs and partnerships.
- Collaborates closely with the development, programs and finance teams to develop proposals and budgets for funding opportunities; this includes clear internal communication on proposal and reporting deadlines, guidelines and policies to programs and finance staff.
- Supports the development of clear and strongly-written proposals, working with U.S. and international programs staff to ensure quality and winning submissions.
- Conducts research to identify new funding and partnership opportunities and develops engagement strategies for HIAS nationally and select partners in the affiliate network.
- Develops and implements comprehensive outreach, solicitation and collaboration strategies for new donors and partners.
- Conducts research to help cultivate relationships with foundations, corporations and other major funding prospects to broaden HIAS’ networks and match donor interests with HIAS’ program areas.
- Updates HIAS’ internal grants databases and tracking systems to ensure internal coordination and the timely submission of proposals and reports.
- Ensures quality information management related to grants by overseeing the regular maintenance of grant files, reporting calendars and updating HIAS’ internal records.
- Monitors donor and philanthropic trends across the U.S., as well as relevant grant-making rules and regulations for changes and developments.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree preferred.
- 4-6 years of experience in grant writing, proposal development and fundraising (can include internships and volunteer experiences).
- A proven track record in Institutional Development and fundraising, especially with foundations; experience in researching and identifying new funding prospects.
- Outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills; strong verbal communication, presentation and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently with remote management, highly self-motivated and must demonstrate a collaborative work style.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment; ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
- Previous professional or volunteer work in refugee assistance preferred; knowledge of social service and social justice programs in the U.S. a plus.
- Some knowledge of Judaism and/or the Jewish community, culture and issues desired.
