Temporary Project Assistant -- Asia-Pacific

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) seeks a Temporary Project Assistant (3 months with possibility of extension) to support its democracy development programs in Asia-Pacific. This position will work with members of the Asia-Pacific (Hong Kong and Taiwan) team on the planning, design, implementation, and monitoring of democracy support programs with elections, political parties, civic organizations, and legislatures. The position will be based in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Asia-Pacific team in organizing and implementing democracy development programs
  • Collect and distribute to the regional team foreign and domestic newspaper, magazine, or journal clippings pertaining to Asia & Pacific affairs
  • Attend meetings and seminars on Asia-Pacific affairs and prepare written presentations to team members
  • Assist in providing logistical and administrative support
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as scanning, photocopying, and reviewing documents, such as leases and contracts, in support of headquarters and field office operations
  • Conduct special projects as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in International Relations, Political Science or a related field, or equivalent experience; Additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement on a one-for-one basis
  • Proficient in English (speaking, reading, writing)
  • Ability to read, write, and speak an Asian language is a plus, particularly Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese or Japanese
  • Available a minimum of 30 hours per week
  • Able to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work with a team
  • Experience managing work prioritization
  • Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting/mobility—to work at a desk and move around work areas
  • Speaking/hearing—to engage orally in conversation with others
  • Seeing—to effectively use a computer screen and for reading and interpreting printed materials, memos and other paperwork
  • Reaching/handling—to input information into computer systems and retrieve and work with appropriate paperwork, equipment and supplies and complete filing

Comments:

To be considered for a Temporary Project Assistant at NDI, you must have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree and be located in Maryland, D.C., or Virginia. The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Bachelor's degree is $16.10. The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Master's degree is $17.10. Both rates will increase July 1 to comply with DC Minimum Wage laws.

While there may be flexibility for remote/hybrid work environments and to comply with tax and legal obligations, successful candidates must be residents of MD, DC, or VA or relocate prior to the start of employment at NDI.
