Overview of position

Reporting and under the supervision of the Commissioner NRC, the Communication Advisor will play a critical role in supporting the DDR program by developing and implementing a comprehensive communication strategy that supports the program's objectives, engages stakeholders, and enhances the visibility and impact of the program. The Advisor will work closely with the program team, national and international partners and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and consistency in messaging across all channels.

Role objectives

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy for the DDR program that aligns with the overall objectives of the program and supports its key messaging and outreach activities.

  • Work with the Government and our client Communication team and other partners to ensure that the communication strategy is consistent with the overall NRC messaging framework and guidelines.

  • Develop and oversee the production of high-quality communication materials, including press releases, brochures, newsletters, videos, social media content, and other materials as needed.

  • Develop and maintain a detailed content calendar that ensures regular and consistent communication with key stakeholders, including ex-combatants, local communities, partner organizations, and government officials.

  • Facilitate the organization of events, workshops, and other activities that support the DDR program's objectives and enhance the visibility of the program.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including ex-combatants, local communities, partner organizations, and government officials, to ensure effective communication and coordination.

  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of the communication activities and provide regular reports to the program team and other stakeholders.

Project reporting

Key competencies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Amharic.

  • Knowledge of DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration) programs and principles.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances and priorities.

  • High level of cultural awareness and sensitivity.

Experience:

  • Experience working with government agencies, NGOs, and international organizations.

  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies and plans.

  • Experience developing and disseminating information materials (print, digital, multimedia).

  • Experience organizing and facilitating meetings, workshops, and events.

  • Knowledge of media relations and experience interacting with journalists and media outlets.

  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the impact of communications activities and make adjustments as necessary.

Team management
  • This role has no team management responsibility.
