Room to Read is a global organization transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®, our innovative model focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools during two time periods that are most critical in a child’s schooling: early primary school for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’ education. We work in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations, and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and ensure girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions.
 
Our program reinforces girls’ commitment to their own education, works with girls to develop essential life skills and increases support for girls’ education among their parents, school staff, and communities.
Room to Read (RtR) envisions a world in which all children can pursue a quality education, reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world. To achieve this goal, RtR focuses on two areas where we believe we can have the greatest impact: Literacy and Gender equality in education in collaboration with communities and local governments across all the operational states. 
 
Background of the assignment
 
The assignment entails editing of text and layouting in designed files .The agency will be provided with final designed prototype of two GEP materials; Student Handbook (3 files) and Teacher’s Handbook (3 files). This design prototype of the files is in Hindi. Further the agency will be provided with the Kannada translation of the text of these 6 files. The agency must use the layout and edit the text as per the Kannada translation (using the exact layout as the hindi files). The final product to be delivered is to be 6 files of Kannada in designed format. The agency would work in coordination with the translation expert.
 
RTR would provide-
  1. Designed open files - 3 student’s handbook and 3 teacher’s handbooks.
  2. Translated text in Kannada language
  3. There would be an approx. of 500 pages(total) in these 6 files.
Scope of Work and expectations-
  1. Use the design prototype of RTR for placing the content.
  2. Incorporate the Kannada translation (text) to produce the final layout of the 6 files
  3. Work in coordination with the consultant hired for translation.
  4. Ensure that the final designed file is in line with content with structure being user friendly and    visually appealing.
  5. Ensure to take feedback from the consultant as well as the program team and revert timely   incorporating feedback.
  6. Responsible for final formatting and layout of text in line with the final editing being done.
  7. The product will not be considered final until the RtR approves it. It may require several rounds of re-iteration or feedback.
  8. Preparing a print ready of all the files. Designing and formatting will be in line with Room to Read’s branding guidelines
Final Deliverables
 
The consultant/vendor/agency/individual should deliver the following-
  1. The pdf version of the edited and finalized pdf files (6 files).
  2. Open files of all 6 documents in InDesign format.
Desired Experience
  • Expertise in high level designing and lay-outing.
  • Must have created communication materials for NGOs
  • Theoretical and practical experience of design software like Adobe Design Premium, In-Design, Photoshop, Coral Draw and web design tools.
  • Have knowledge and experience in creating e-content.
  • At least 5 years of work experience in graphic designing with access to graphic design software and equipment
  • Knowledge of new evolving technology
  • Proficiency in both Hindi and English
Payment Terms shall be as follows:
  • 25% will be paid after submitting final designed 2 files of Teacher’s Handbook in Kannada.
  • 50 % will be paid after submitting 3 final designed file Teacher’s Handbook (1) and Student’s Handbook (2) in Kannada.
  • 25% will be paid after submitting final designed file (1) of teacher’s handbook in Kannada.

  1. A technical proposal which will outline the way this assignment will be approached.
  2. The proposal should mention the timeline for completing the deliverables. The technical proposal should include an outline of content and your approach for all the above-mentioned deliverables.

The TDS will be applicable on the consultancy fee. 
 
The awarded consultant/vendor/agency/individual will be expected to sign and abide the Child Protection policy of Room to Read.
