Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal, Canada and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the Secretariat of the CBD, in the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES), within the Communication and Awareness Unit (CA). Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Executive Secretary and the direct supervision of the Information Officer acting as the Head of the Communication and Awareness Unit (CA), the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Responsibilities

A. Provides support to communications for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including the following: a) Supports the development of communications campaigns, consistent with the strategy approved by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to raise the profile of biodiversity and the Convention and its Protocols and implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including through social-media and other innovative communication, public relations and marketing tools. b) Supports efforts to raise the visibility of the Convention and its Protocol’s and biodiversity more generally through public relations and marketing activities.
B. Provides support to Parties to the Convention for implementation of the Programme of Work for Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA), according to the relevant COP decisions: a) Creates new and innovative capacity development tools for communication. b) Disseminates and refines tools, including relevant awareness-raising toolkits. Supports efforts by Parties and partner organizations, to implement activities for the Programme of work. c) Develops new and innovative communication products for target audiences, including, inter alia: the business sector.
C Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, youth, women and actors in other sectors.
D. Performs other related duties as required.

Competencies

PROFESSIONALISM: Demonstrated professional competence in deploying innovative communications methodologies and tools including a focus on social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and others is required. Proven track record of results-oriented delivery of communications products and campaigns is desirable. Ability to effectively and concisely communicate global biodiversity policy and its relationship to other global environmental and sustainable development agendas to a variety of target audiences is desirable. Established track record of developing communication capacity, in particular in developing countries is desirable. In depth knowledge of strategic communications methodologies and techniques, along with evidence of successful deployment in the context of communications campaigns and events is desirable. The ability to analyze and interpret data in support of decision-making and convey resulting information to management. Shows pride in work and achievements. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; Is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges. Remains calms in stressful situations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

COMMUNICATION: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately. Asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; Uses time efficiently.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international relations, environmental affairs, management, political science, journalism, communications marketing and public relations or related fields is required.

A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of experience working in the communications field on environmental issues is required.

Work experience in developing communication capacity of organizations in developing countries is desirable.

Work Experience working on communications and outreach that relate to sustainable development, environmental and/or biodiversity issues is desirable.

Work Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, Publisher etc.) and advance knowledge of presentation and graphic software/platforms (Adobe InDesign, Canva, Shorthand) preferred is desirable.

Work experience in document production and editing is desirable.

A minimum of two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other official UN languages is desirable.

NOTE: ''Fluency'' equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ''Knowledge of'' equals a rating of ''confident'' in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
