The Forestry Division (NFO) leads FAO's work in promoting sustainable forest management and providing leadership on the environmental, social and economic dimensions of forestry, including contributions of forests and trees to poverty reduction and food security and nutrition. Staff of the Division liaise with member countries, civil society and the private sector in aspects ranging from development of effective forest policies to forest conservation and management issues and strengthening the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Division also collects, analyses and disseminates information on the world's forest resources and on the production, trade and consumption of wood and non-wood forest products.
The post is located in the Statutory Bodies, CPF and Outreach team (NFOI) in the Forestry Division (NFO) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Reporting Lines
The Forestry Officer (Statutory Bodies and Partnerships) reports to Senior Forestry Officer/Team Leader, NFOI/Committee on Forestry (COFO) Secretary, Forestry Division (NFO).
Technical Focus
Support to statutory and technical bodies, international forest policy and partnerships.
Key Results
Research, technical analysis and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.
Key Functions
• Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.
• Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages.
• Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
• Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases.
• Participates on multidisciplinary teams, and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other centres/divisions/offices/ and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
• Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Members such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, on-line tools.
• Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
• Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Corporate Strategy.
Specific Functions
• Coordinates, in liaison with member governments, FAO Decentralized Offices, and international organizations the planning, organization, and operation of meetings, in particular forestry statutory bodies.
• Supports the work of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), a voluntary partnership of 16 organizations with significant programmes on forests and forestry issues and liaises with counterparts in member organizations of the CPF, and with FAO relevant units regarding technical and procedural issues.
• Develops and maintains contacts with counterparts in FAO Permanent Representation offices, in particular with regards to matters relevant to Statutory Bodies related to forestry.
• Liaises with the counterparts in appropriate FAO centres/divisions/offices e.g. Governing Bodies Servicing (CSG) Regional Offices and Corporate Logistics Services Division (CSL) to ensure that meetings of Statutory Bodies on forestry e.g. Committee on Forestry (COFO), Regional Forestry Commissions and forestry technical bodies, etc., are effectively planned, organized and managed in line with FAO policies and procedures, and advises secretaries accordingly.
• In collaboration with COFO Secretary and other relevant Secretaries, ensures the timely and effective planning and organization of formal sessions of these bodies.
• Organizes logistical arrangements for formal sessions of Statutory Bodies e.g. COFO; determines requirements for simultaneous interpretation and translation services; be responsible for all administrative and operational activities e.g. registration of delegates, coordination of assignments and supervision of support staff, reproduction and distribution of in-session documents and electronic posting and circulation of documents and reports.
• Supports resource mobilization.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in forest policy, resources management or a related field.
• Five years of relevant experience in forest policy and partnerships, which at least two years at the global level.
• Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate – level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish)
