Mission and objectives
The Office’s guiding mission is to support Pacific island developing countries in their efforts to attain the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and implement the Small Island Developing States Accelerated Modalities of Action (S.A.M.O.A. Pathway).
Context
The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Accelerated Modalities of Action Pathway (SAMOA Pathway) is coming to an end in 2024. Paragraph 20(a) of UN General Assembly Resolution (A/RES/76/203) calls for the convening in 2024 of a Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which will, inter alia, be aimed at assessing the ability of small island developing States to meet the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. This meeting will take place in Antigua and Barbuda. ESCAP’s contribution to the Fourth UN Conference on SIDS in 2024 will focus on all 15 Asia-Pacific SIDS (Fiji, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Singapore, Tonga, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu) and 7 associate members (American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Guam, New Caledonia, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands). Through this assignment, ESCAP seeks to collaborate with online volunteers where the Online Volunteers will support the ESCAP Subregional Office for the Pacific to prepare a publication by covering the five thematic areas: • Thematic Area 1: Promote sustained and sustainable, inclusive and equitable economic growth, with decent work for all, sustainable consumption and production and sustainable transportation; • Thematic Area 2: Act to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impacts by implementing sustainable energy and disaster risk reduction programmes; • Thematic Area 3: Protect the biodiversity and environmental health of small island developing States by mitigating the impact of invasive species and by properly managing chemicals and water, including hazardous waste, and protecting the oceans and seas; • Thematic Area 4: Improve human health and social development through food security and nutrition and improved water and sanitation and by reducing the incidence of noncommunicable diseases and promoting gender equity and women’s empowerment; and • Thematic Area 5: Fostering partnerships among small island developing States, United Nations agencies, development partners and others to achieve the goals. The publication should present the contribution of UN/ESCAP through various engagements since the adoption of the SAMOA Pathway in 2014, with a particular focus on how these collaborative efforts contributed to the advancement of this global partnership for SIDS in Asia and the Pacific.
