Organizational Context

IFRC GO Platform aims to connect information on needs with the right response in disaster situations.

This goal is achieved by making sure that the information - or data - we use is both accurate and accessible. Better data enables the the 192 members of the IFRC respond more effectively to the needs of disaster-affected people.

We seek a Data Analyst intern, who helps to maintain high-quality data on GO and improves the data interoperability with other systems. The GO Data Analyst Intern will be a member of the Information Management team at IFRC.

Job Purpose

Purpose of the Intern:

We are looking for a driven and detail-oriented person to join the IFRC GO team as Data Analyst Intern. The primary objective of this internship is to support the GO team in providing high-quality data on the platform. As a GO Data Analyst Intern, you will be responsible for improving the quality and usability of GO data.  

Your main focus will be to audit the GO database and ensuring the format, consistency, and completeness of current datasets. You will analyse the structural and unique issues of the database, find solutions to improve it and either implement them yourself or work with GO team to carry out improvements. You will also be responsible for identifying potential improvements to the data input through the GO user interface and the API.

In addition to these tasks, you will be analyzing the documentation of the API and preparing descriptions for documentation gaps. You will also analyze frequently used API endpoints in terms of usability, seeking missing parameters that can help improve interoperability and enhance the effective usage of the endpoint.

Another significant aspect of your role will be to improve the usability of GO data.  You will do this first through an analysis of the data tables on the GO user interface. You review the available tables on the GO front-end systematically and suggest improvements towards data table harmonization. You will also support ad hoc user requests on API connectivity and API endpoint usage and prepare Power Query (for Excel and PowerBI)  files that connect to the GO API on demand.

We are looking for someone who has a strong analytical mind, exceptional attention to detail, and excellent problem-solving skills. You should have experience in data analysis and database management, and familiarity with data analysis tools such as Power Query, Excel, and Python. You should also be able to work independently, take initiative, and communicate effectively with the team.

You will work closely with the GO Project Officer, the IM Data Science Senior Officer, and the GO Application Developer Officer.  You will also have the opportunity to interact with Information Management colleagues from the IFRC secretariat.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Task Description & Deliverables:

The IFRC is looking for an intern that will support the GO team.  The key tasks of the intern will be:

•    Conduct thorough research on the format, consistency, and completeness of current datasets on the GO database
•    Identify structural and unique issues in the GO database and suggest possible solutions to improve it
•    Analyze the usability of frequently used API endpoints and seek missing parameters that can help improve interoperability and enhance the effective usage of the endpoint
•    Analyze the completeness of API documentation and prepare descriptions for documentation gaps
•    Review data tables on the GO user interface systematically and suggest improvements towards data table harmonization
•    Support ad hoc user requests on API connectivity and API endpoint usage
•    Prepare Power Query files and Power BI templates that connect to the GO API as required
•    Collaborate with the GO Project Officer, IM Data Science Senior Officer, and GO Application Developer Officer

Deliverables:
•    A comprehensive report detailing the findings from the audit of the GO database, including identified structural and unique issues and possible solutions for improvement
•    A documentation report detailing the completeness of API documentation and suggested descriptions for documentation gaps
•    A usability report of frequently used API endpoints, including a list of missing parameters that can help improve interoperability and enhance the effective usage of the endpoint
•    A report outlining suggestions for harmonizing the data tables on the GO user interface
•    A set of Power Query files and Power BI templates that connect to the GO API as requested
•    Ad hoc support for user requests on API connectivity and endpoint usage

The intern will report to the GO Senior Office within the Information Management team, within the Disaster and Crisis (Prevention, Response and Recovery) Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Languages

Knowledge / Skills Required:

The intern should have:

  • Fluent written and oral communication skills in English is mandatory. Fluency in at least one among French, Spanish and/or Arabic is a plus. Any other non-European language is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of data analysis methods.
  • Experience in data analysis and transformation.
  • Experience with databases, creation/use of large datasets, data entry, and aggregation of data.
  • Familiarity with APIs (Application Programming Interface). Experience in API documentation is a plus.
  • Knowledge of online and offline analysis tools, data visualization & dashboards, preferred (e.g. Python, Power Bi, Tableau, Excel, Power Query, etc.);
