Intern- WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The mission of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme (WHE-The Programme) is to build the capacity of Member States to manage public health threats and health emergency risks and, when national capacities are overwhelmed, to lead and coordinate the international response to contain outbreaks and health emergencies and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Terms of reference

Under the supervision of Team Lead WHE, the intern is assigned the agreed terms of reference:

• review literature and conduct literature surveys as per the requirement of WHE team based in Amman, Jordan
• undertake web research and data collection on specific subject area such as emergency preparedness and response, public health institutes etc.
• organize data and documents related to domains of WHE work in Jordan
• participate in the development of tools and guidelines on emergency operations and response
• assist in drafting, formatting and editing policy briefs, tool kits, guides/manuals, hand-outs, brochures and reports relevant to emergency operations and response
• assist in organizing workshops, meetings, conferences, events relevant to areas of WHE domain
• participate in on-going departmental projects of WHE based in Amman, Jordan.

Learning objectives

The purpose of the WHO Internship Programme is to provide an enriching learning experience for students and recent graduates. The Learning Objectives outlined within each internship vacancy are a key component of the programme.

Within this internship, the intern will:

• Understand the objectives of the programme/area of work of emergency preparedness and response
• Communicate clearly about the programme/area of work of WHE work within the scope of WHO GPW 13
• Understand the difference of work between headquarters, regional offices and country offices in the context of WHE work
• Know how to conduct and review literature surveys especially related to WHE domain of work
• Know how to assemble data and prepare a comprehensive analysis
• Prepare background documents for meetings relevant to WHE scope of work.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Have completed the equivalent of three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply to the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification). Ideally studies in development, public health, international relations, research and or science.

In addition, interns need to be familiar with commonly used computer programmes, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Knowledge of specialized computer programmes, for example, statistical software such as XLStat may be an advantage.

Experience

• Experience in research and/or in drafting reports
• Experience with data analysis, statistical packages and interest in the design of graphical display and analysis of health information in an international comparative perspective, such as for health system performance assessment
• Experience in the subject area through academic work or research
• Field projects and/or developing country experience

Languages

Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of Arabic. Intermediate knowledge of other UN language.
