OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Violence and Injury Prevention Programme aims to operationalize related global initiatives, develop regional guidance and support Member States with evidence based multisectoral policies and action plans to prevent and reduce mortality, morbidity and disability due to violence and injuries with a focus on unintentional injuries (road traffic injuries, drowning and falls among others) and interpersonal violence as well as disability and rehabilitation. The goal is to ensure that appropriate and timely technical support and guidance is provided for developing, strengthening, implementing and evaluating national strategies, plans and programmes for violence and injury prevention, and disability and rehabilitation. This also entails assistance in building capacities at all levels including surveillance, evidence-based practices and evaluation. Establishing and strengthening regional networks to share best practices and promoting concerted actions across sectors and countries; as well as monitoring and reporting the regional magnitude and trends of violence and injuries as well as disability and needs for rehabilitation; and resource mobilization are also important mandates of the Violence and Injury Prevention Programme.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Terms of reference

Under the supervision of the Regional Adviser, Department of Healthier Populations, the intern will support the delivery of planned activities of the unit such as on violence prevention and control, in particular gender-based violence (GBV) and violence against children (VaC) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), which will include the following:

  • support the implementation of planned activities including conducting literature searches and preparing briefing notes and background documents;
  • support the team in coordinating and following up all tasks required for the implementation of the programmes’ activities, including preparing technical, information and advocacy material among others
  • participate in establishing an online data platform (and excel sheet) compiling received and retrieved data;
  • contribute to the preparation of information products for publication based on the findings of undertaken literature searches, data collection and studies;
  • participate in other projects of the unit.

Within this internship, the intern will:

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Have completed three years of full-time studies in medicine, public health, epidemiology, or related field at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply for the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification)

In addition, interns need to be familiar with commonly used computer programmes, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Knowledge of specialized computer programmes, for example, statistical software such as XLStat may be an advantage.

Experience

  • Experience in research, data analysis and/or in drafting reports
  • Experience in public health and linkages to human rights and gender through academic work or research
  • Field and/or developing country experience

Languages

Essential: Expert knowledge of English.Desirable: Expert knowledge of Arabic. Intermediate knowledge of other UN language.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Interns do not receive a salary. They do however receive a living allowance. The allowance depends on the duty station and other external support (grant, scholarships, etc.) received by the intern.. The exact amount of the living allowance will be calculated for each intern, after selection, based on a legal financial disclosure form that the individual will complete. WHO also provides all interns with accident and medical insurance coverage.

  • If selected for a WHO Internship, candidates will be required to provide certified copies of proof of enrolment in an eligible course of studies, a completed WHO medical certificate of fitness for work, and the contact details for reference checks.
  • Interns are not eligible to take up a consultant or other non-staff contract in WHO for a period of three months following the end of the internship. However, no such restriction applies to temporary or longer-term staff positions if the vacancy has been advertised and a competitive process completed.
