Overview of position

Our client in Somalia have their operations engaged in providing contract management & construction supervision support to various infrastructure projects implemented by the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of their government partner. The projects include roads rehabilitation, construction of health facilities & various urban & community infrastructure works. They are responsible for ensuring that these works are implemented in accordance with the technical design, specifications & engineering standards as specified in the contract documents & also in compliance with the approved environmental & social safeguards standards. Our clients project team includes Engineers, Surveyors, Laboratory Technicians, Environmental & Social Safeguard Specialists, Construction Support Personnel & the support staff. Their technical team working alongside with their government partners also contributes to the strengthening of their government partners capacity by sharing knowledge & engaging in ‘on the job’ training opportunities. In order to support the upcoming new construction activities at various districts of Hirshabelle, Jubaland & South West States, hence our client is recruiting Construction Assistant(s) to the project team.

Role objectives

The Construction Assistant will assist in the site supervision & reporting activities, under the guidance of the Engineer. The specific roles & responsibilities will include:

  • Assist the Engineer in day to day supervision of the construction works in checking the contractors work & maintaining daily site diaries on progress & works quality.

  • Assist the Environmental & Social Safeguard Specialist in the monitoring of the social & environmental impact management activities of the works by the contractor(s) & keeping of the records.

  • Assist the Engineer in taking measurements of contractor(s) completed works in order to verify the contractor(s) submitted invoices for the works completed.

  • Assist in the site surveys, material sampling & other duties related to the works implementation progress monitoring & quality control as directed by the Engineer.

  • Participate in site meetings involving the contractor & our client & their stakeholders.

Project reporting

This role reports to the Engineer.

Key competencies
  • Bachelor's Degree or a Diploma in Civil Engineering will be an asset.

  • 2 or more years of experience in civil construction works is required.

  • Excellent command of Somali & English language (oral & written) is required.

  • Ability to plan, organise, manage & implement work assignments, juggle competing demands & work under pressure of frequent & tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply good judgement & decision making skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills & ability to establish & maintain effective partnerships & working relations with people in a multicultural, multi ethnic environment with sensitivity & respect for diversity.

This role has no team management responsibility.
