Mission and objectives
The UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and Arab Region (the “Centre”), Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in Doha was established by General Assembly Resolution 60/153 (December 2005). The Centre was set up in Doha, Qatar in 2009, and is mandated to undertake human rights training and documentation activities according to international human rights standards and to support such efforts by Governments, UN agencies and programmes, national human rights institutions and non-governmental organizations. It covers 25 countries, of which 22 are member of the League of Arab States (LAS), and 3 are in the South-West Asia region. They include Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the State of Palestine. It serves as a regional hub and centre of excellence in the areas of human rights training, education and documentation. It contributes to the implementation of OHCHR’s mandate in the region by: - Strengthening the application of human rights norms, skills and values in the region through education, training and documentation; - Strengthening the effectiveness of human rights education and training by OHCHR, UN partners, regional and national actors through the application and dissemination of best-practice methodologies; - Facilitating knowledge management in OHCHR’s key areas of engagement in the region. The Centre has two main units, namely: 1) Human Rights Education and Training Unit, 2) Knowledge Management and Publication Unit. In addition to the administrative team which supports the performance of the functions of the Centre.
Context
The OHCHR MENA office in Qatar is consistently engaged in producing reports regarding the human rights conditions in Arab states and crafting concept notes aimed at securing resources for field units throughout the region. To ensure the accessibility of these documents to a broader audience within the region, we are actively seeking the assistance of Online Volunteers who can assist in translating certain documents from Arabic to English and vice versa.
Task description
We are seeking two online volunteers to support us in translating concept notes, agendas and reports. The volunteers will do the following: - Translate three concept notes (around three pages each) from English to Arabic and vice versa. - Translate 2 reports (15 pages each). Online volunteers will be provided with the document in the original language and will receive guidance on the target audience and our communications guidelines, as well as other guidance as needed.
