The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was founded in 1863 and is a humanitarian institution based in Geneva, Switzerland.
The ICRC is an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence. It takes action in response to emergencies and at the same time promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law.
More than 2,000 people are currently on field missions for the ICRC across the globe, backed up by some 11,900 nationally employed and supported and coordinated by around 1,000 staff at Geneva headquarters.
