Today the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent, humanitarian, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, who provides assistance, protection and durable solutions to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP) worldwide. NRC promotes and protects the rights of refugees and people who have been displaced within their own country. We take action during situations of armed conflict, and engage in other contexts where our competences will add value. The majority of our more than 5000 staff members are national employees in NRC’s projects in around 31 countries worldwide. All our projects are supervised by the NRC Head Office located in Oslo.

NRC focus areas

NRC's main activity is the deliverance of humanitarian aid through programme activities in the field. NRC specialises in five programme areas, or core competences - Shelter, Food Security, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Education, and Information Counselling and Legal Aid (ICLA). The core competences are adaptive to different contexts and mutually reinforcing.

NRC global advocate for IDP

NRC also advocates on local, national, regional and global levels for the rights of displaced and vulnerable people. Our advocacy is based on our first-hand experience from the field. In order to understand and respond better to displacement, NRC conducts research into both global displacement and specific displacement contexts.

NRC’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre in Geneva is a global leader in monitoring, reporting and advocating specifically on internal displacement.

NORCAP - NRC’s largest roster

NRC deploys experts: Through our rosters, NRC strengthens the capacity of the international community to prevent and respond to humanitarian challenges through the provision of expert personnel to national stakeholders and international organisations.

NORCAP is NRC’s largest roster consisting of 700 experts from Norway, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. NORCAP strives to make humanitarian efforts more representative and better adapted to the needs and rights of crisis-affected people. At any given time, around 150 of our roster members are on assignment in more than 40 countries.
