Grateful for 2017, optimistic for 2018

In 2017 Impactpool witnessed millions of visits to our website and thousands of new members that used Impactpool to find a job in order to make an impact. We recently hit the milestone of 250.000 registered members, all interested in working at mission-driven organizations and creating a lasting impact.

In 2018, we'll continue to help you in order to increase your chances in mission-driven organizations by promoting jobs, offering coaching sessions, hosting webinars and by writing dedicated articles. We are very excited for 2018 and we hope that you are willing to be a part of it.

Together with you, we want to look back at 2017 by sharing vital and unique information about the past year including; most common job grades, the engagement by age & gender, the most sought-after occupational areas, and the most popular organizations.



The 10 locations that hired most personnel in 2017. 

10. Manila, Philippines

Many International Organizations and NGO's (Asian Development Bank, UNICEF, and UNDP)  are active in South-East Asia with offices in Manila.  

The term "Manila" is commonly used to refer to the whole metropolitan area, the greater metropolitan area or the city proper. The officially-defined metropolitan area called Metro Manila, the capital region of the Philippines includes the much larger Quezon City and the Makati Central Business District. It is the most populous region of the country, one of the most populous urban areas in the world, and is one of the wealthiest regions in Southeast Asia.

9. Kabul, Afghanistan.
 

In 2017, armed conflict and disasters continued to plague Afghanistan and its civilians. As the country struggles to rebuild, International Organizations and NGO's such as the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and the SCA - Swedish Committee for Afghanistan kept on assisting and helping them.

Lots of vacancies were opened in Kabul, Afghanistan and we expect that many more positions will open in 2018 since there are no signs yet of overcoming the daily struggles that Afghanistan is facing. The work of International Organizations and NGO's will remain vital and extremely important.

8. Erbil, Iraq.

The humanitarian crisis in Iraq remains one of the largest and most volatile in the world. Nearly 3.7 million school-aged Iraqi children attend school irregularly or not at all, and more than 760,000 displaced children have missed an entire year of education.

Among the issues created by a lack of documentation are housing, land, and property. Women face particular challenges during displacement and once they return as they have fewer opportunities for livelihoods, education, and housing. Local buildings and land, meanwhile, may be contaminated with unexploded ordnance and public services and markets may be disrupted, if functioning at all.

In order to enlighten the burden of all the victims many International Organizations and NGO's remained active in Erbil and worked in an extremely challenging environment. Notable organizations that employed personnel in Erbil were NRC, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UNOPS.

7. Nairobi, Kenya.

Kenya is hosting close to 480,000 refugees and asylum seekers in the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps, as well as in urban areas. The majority (over 350,000) are Somali, displaced either during the collapse of the Somali state in the early 1990s or more recently because of drought.

On the other hand, Nairobi is the hub of Eastern Africa and has seen huge growth, this statement is proven by the huge amount of jobs that were opened here throughout 2017. African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), the Danish Refugee Council and IDinsight.

6. Vienna, Austria.

Many International Organizations and NGO's have offices in Austria's beautiful capital of Vienna. Most vacancies in Vienna came from UNOPS, UNOV, and IAEA, who has headquarters in Vienna. The IAEA - International Atomic Energy Agency is widely known as the world's "Atoms for Peace" organization within the United Nations family.

The Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

5. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Conflict, drought, and flooding are the main causes of displacement in Ethiopia. Surrounded by a region in conflict, Ethiopia is Africa's largest refugee-hosting country in 2017

Since October 2016, Ethiopia hosted more than 800,000 refugees. They were mainly from neighboring South Sudan, Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia. Between 500,000 and 800,000 people in Ethiopia are internally displaced. Many International Organizations and NGO's, (Danish Refugee Council (DRC), UNOPS and UNDP ) have stayed active in Ethiopia in order to help the refugees and victims of these crises.

4. Washington D.C., United States of America.

Many International Organizations have their headquarters in the capital of the United States of America. Our partners UNICEF, and UN Women have posted several vacancies in Washington D.C. throughout 2017.

3. Amman, Jordan.

In 2017, Jordan is has continued to host over half a million Syrians within its borders. This huge amount of people in urgent need is just too much to handle for 1 country alone resulting in a generation of Syrians that are now growing up without the schooling and opportunities they need and deserve.

Over 30% of all Syrian refugee children in Jordan remain out of school. For those who are learning, it's tough to stay in school. Some have missed out on years of their education and can't keep up. Others can't afford the costs of books and school supplies. More still must find informal work to help feed their families. Many public schools, meanwhile, have reached their limit and can't accommodate more children. 

In order to help these children and refugees. Many International Organizations and NGO's such as UNICEF, UNFPA, UNOPS, NRC, and DRC have hired skilled and experienced personnel to serve and fight against this huge humanitarian crises.

2. New York City, United States of America.

On a 2nd place, we find New York City, home of the UN Headquarters and many other International Organizations and NGO's. Fun fact: Although it is situated in New York City, the land occupied by the United Nations Headquarters and the spaces of buildings that it rents are under the sole administration of the United Nations and not the U.S. government.

1. Geneva, Switzerland

The duty station with the most vacancies in 2017 is Geneva! Home of several International Organizations and NGO's such as CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research, the ICRC - International Committee of the Red Cross - WIPO - World Intellectual Property Organization, ITC - International Trade Centre and several UN-bodies it is no surprise that many vacancies were posted here.

Geneva is a global city, a financial center, and a worldwide center for diplomacy due to the presence of numerous international organizations, including the headquarters of many of the agencies of the United Nations. Geneva is the city that hosts the highest number of international organizations in the world. It is also the place where the Geneva Conventions were signed, which chiefly concern the treatment of wartime non-combatants and prisoners of war.
