Gain a brief insight into the professional experience of Najat Rochdi, a Senior Leader with the United Nations. In March 2017, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Ms. Rochdi of Morocco as Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), where she will also serve as Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
As Deputy Special Representative, Ms. Rochdi is responsible for supporting the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) and Head of Mission in delivering the objectives of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic. The Peacekeeping mission comprises 10,044 troops, 426 military observers, 1,688 police, 1,007 civilian personnel and 212 UN Volunteers. The current annual budget for the mission is $920,727,900.
MINUSCA is an integrated mission, which means the development and humanitarian aspects of the UN presence are “integrated” into the peace operation. As Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative Ms. Rochdi is therefore responsible for advising the SRSG on humanitarian and development issues and providing strategic advice and vision on the support to be provided by the UN agencies, funds and programs operating in the mission area. Her functions also include ensuring that the strategies, plans and programmes for humanitarian and developmental assistance are well integrated and aligned with national planning and strategic frameworks and linked with the overall objectives and planning process of the United Nations in the Central African Republic and the Mission’s mandate.
Ms. Rochdi has extensive experience in development and humanitarian affairs. She was until recently the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and the UNDP Resident Representative in Cameroon. Previously, she served as Deputy Director in charge of Policy, Communication and Operation in the UNDP Geneva Liaison Office and as UNDP Regional Coordinator of Information and Communication Technology for Development in the Arab Region in Cairo, Egypt.
Prior to her tenure with UNDP, she held senior-level positions in the Moroccan Government, including Deputy Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise, Director General of International Cooperation and Development in the Ministry of Post and Information Technology and Adviser to the Prime Minister. She has also been a professor at the Collège Royal and at the Information Sciences University in Rabat, Morocco.
Ms. Rochdi holds a doctorate in mathematics and engineering in computer sciences from the University of National Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics (INSEA) in Rabat and the University of Montreal, Canada.
