Why multilateralism matters more than ever.
International organizations and the UN family, including the World Health Organization (WHO), exist because the world’s most pressing challenges do not respect borders. From preventing pandemics to responding to natural disasters and ensuring equitable access to healthcare, to establishing international guidelines and norms affecting the food we eat, the medicines we use, the air we breathe, these institutions play a vital role in global stability. Yet, they often navigate funding challenges and political pressures. The #1Dollar1World movement stands as a testament to the belief that, regardless of nationality or political stance, people still recognize the need for multilateralism and the power of collective action.
In a world grappling with complex global crises—from pandemics to climate change—no single country or organization can address these challenges alone. Multilateralism is not just an ideal; it is an essential foundation for a more stable and resilient future.
How the #1dollar1world campaign was born.
The #1Dollar1World campaign was launched by Tania Cernuschi, a dedicated WHO staff member who has worked mostly on worldwide access to vaccines. She saw an opportunity amid frustration—not to simply accept the status quo and the consequences of political decisions beyond the control of individual staff or the public.
She envisioned a campaign that could turn global uncertainty into a call for action. Rather than viewing financial setbacks as limitations, she took action, transforming her beliefs into an inclusive movement—one that enables individuals everywhere to express their support for multilateral organizations like WHO.
Her vision was simple yet powerful: If everyone who believes in global health, WHO, the United Nations and multilateralism contributes just one dollar, it would do more than provide funding—it would send a clear message: multilateral institutions are not alone. They have the support of people worldwide.
To ensure the campaign had a legitimate and effective donation channel, Tania partnered with the WHO Foundation, which played a crucial role in formalizing the initiative and providing a secure platform for contributions. This collaboration helped amplify the movement’s reach and impact, making it easier for people around the world to participate WHO Foundation
This campaign stands as a testament to employee advocacy and the power of grassroots mobilization. It serves as a reminder that the strongest ambassadors for international organizations are both those who work within them and those who benefit from their impact.
