Organisational context

The Integrated Services Division (ISD) within the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) centralizes the specialized support functions that provide cross-cutting support to the Office. The Division is headed by a Director who is responsible for managing the reliable and cost-effective delivery of integrated services and ensuring that the OTP is adequately supported through all relevant service functions, technologies and equipment, and that appropriate services are available to allow the implementation of the Office’s mandate. The services include planning and operations, witness protection and management, information knowledge and evidence management,  forensic science,  language and administrative support. The Division works to develop new approaches and strategies that promote the use of modern tools and advanced technology as mechanisms to strengthen the effectiveness of the Office.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent of the post will work in the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor reporting to the Language Coordinator. He or she will work in a demanding but rewarding environment. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Revise translations from Ukrainian into English produced by staff translators, contractual translators or external freelancers, dealing with a wide range of technical subjects often requiring considerable specialization;
  • On occasion, provide self-revised translations, especially of critical, complex, or urgent texts;
  • Manage the timely provision of fit-for-purpose translation services in support of OTP operations, with responsibility for the direct supervision and activities of the Ukrainian translation team and administrative support, and for coordination with client units to forecast and deliver on needs in a timely manner;
  • Source, test and select freelance and staff translators to meet the OTP’s Ukrainian-language needs;
  • Implement quality assurance measures for Ukrainian-language texts translated from and into English;
  • Carry out linguistic research, identifying, preparing and approving new terminology and glossary entries;
  • In keeping with the latest Technology Developments (CAT Tools and Machine Translation), update and develop translation guidelines, procedures and workflows, and monitor workload levels, making budget and human resources recommendations;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Essential Qualifications

Education:

Advanced university degree in translation, languages, linguistics or any other related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

A minimum of seven (7) years (nine (9) years with a first-level university degree) of relevant work experience as a translator, reviser, editor or in any other relevant area of work, preferably in an international organisation, is required.

  • Openness to skills development.

Knowledges of languages:

Native or near-native command of English and high-level of proficiency in Ukrainian are required. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish) or of a Situation-related language (e.g. Russian) would be considered an asset.
