Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Technical Team of the Global Crisis Response Group in the Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Associate Economics Affairs Officer reports to the Senior Coordinator of the Technical Team. The Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance (GCRG) was established by the UN Secretary-General to coordinate the global response to the worldwide impacts of the war in Ukraine. A Task Team was established under UNCTAD to provide the group with data and analysis, a platform for the creation of partnerships, coordination, and policy recommendations. Due to the increasing demands on the Group, a GCRG Technical Team is being established to support this work. The future incumbent of this temporary position will be part of the Technical Team.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the duties of the Associate Economic Affairs Officer include the following: Economic and/or sector analysis: • Collects, evaluates, interprets, analyses specified statistics and qualitative socio-economic information obtained from a variety of sources and pertaining to particular sectors, countries, regions or development topics with a view to monitor the consequences of the global crisis on food, energy and finance in developing countries. • Maintains databases and programmes for database management and organizes non-quantitative information. • Assists in the design, testing, operation, and modification of econometric models. • Prepares briefing notes, inputs to speeches and similar material on economic or sector issues in a form that is meaningful to non-specialists. • Prepares first drafts of sector, country, or regional components of analytical studies on development issues and policies. • Assists in the organization and servicing of expert group meetings, seminars, etc., on development issues. Intergovernmental support: • Prepares inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies. • Prepares inputs for reports to negotiations related to the war in Ukraine and its economic effects on developing countries. • Follows interagency and intergovernmental meetings and prepares summary reports and similar material. • Prepares inputs to statements by members of the Technical Team and Secretariat staff to such meetings. • Assists in the organization of panels, round tables etc., on development issues for inter-governmental processes. General: • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s services. • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Education
Advanced university degree in economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required. Experience working on trade, trade policy, and their impacts on developing countries is desirable. Experience working on investment and development issues is desirable. Experience working on trade, energy and climate change issues is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

• This is a temporary position available immediately and initially until 30 June 2024. Extensions may be possible provided availability of funds, continuing need of the service and satisfactory performance.
