Mission and objectives

As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience.

Context

Afghanistan faces multiple challenges, with climate, peace, and development issue tightly interwoven . Afghanistan is a very diverse country--in terms of geography, economy, people. Thus, understanding of subnational, local conditions is crucial. Policy and Knowledge Management Unit (PKU) compiles available datasets for layered visualization of local conditions. You will support this work by documenting available datasets and preparing datasets for PKU use. The reserach could include additional data for neighboring countries for transboundary issues, like water. Through this work you will learn about nexus approach, get practical skills in GIS, and understanding of Afghanistan (and broader Central Asia).

Task description

• Research and document available geo-referenced datasets for Afghanistan. • Prepare datasets for use by Policy and Knowledge Management Unit • Produce several visualizations (maps, charts, combined visualizations) using the integrated dataset
