Mission and objectives

UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (PAPP) derives its mandate from the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 33/147 of 20 December 1978. Called upon by United Nations Member States in that year, UNDP was requested “to improve the economic and social conditions of the Palestinian people by identifying their social and economic needs and by establishing concrete projects to that end”. UNDP/PAPP is a responsive development agency that works together with the Palestinian people to fulfil their aspiration for sustainable human development based on self-determination, equality and freedom.

Context

Through the project “Renewable Energy Investments at Education Facilities in East Jerusalem” funded by the Government of Norway, and in partnership with the Palestinian counterparts, the project aims to introduce clean, cost-effective, and highly efficient energy solutions for schools to establish a sustainable business model for solar energy investment and raise awareness among students, educators, and communities about the value of renewable energy. This initiative contributes for mitigating climate change, reducing carbon emissions (carbon footprint), and protecting the environment at large. The Project Outcome is enhanced financial sustainability and self-resilience of Palestinian institutions in East Jerusalem, integrating environment-friendly approaches. This outcome is realized through the following output and related activities: Output 1: Clean, affordable, and efficient energy solutions implemented at school facilities in East Jerusalem. Activity 1.1.1: Identification of school facilities for the Investment of solar energy and energy efficiency. Activity 1.1.2: Installation of solar energy systems at targeted schools in East Jerusalem. Activity 1.1.3: Implementation of energy efficiency systems for targeted schools.

Task description

The National UN Youth Volunteer, under the direct supervision of the UNDP Project manager, will be responsible for supporting various activities aimed at advancing renewable energy initiatives in East Jerusalem including the following tasks: Data collection, research and analysis: 1) Support the UNDP team in data collection and analysis in the targeted East Jerusalem schools, and contribute to the development of fact sheets, reports and analysis documents. 2) Develop survey/questionnaires and/or conduct interviews and other forms of data collection sources as needed for analysis purposes. 3) Develop fact sheets and briefs as needed, in close consultation with UNDP team. Advocacy, awareness and mobilization: 1) Collect data and transformation into proposed awareness actions. 2) Provide assistance to design and implement awareness actions in the targeted schools and the local community. 3) Facilitate linkages between the project, and other ongoing initiatives to maximize the synergy and learning, especially with the TVET streams of renewable energy, with focus on students’ exposure and orientation to the investments in solar energy in East Jerusalem, and students at academic schools to enhance their knowledge of environmental challenges and opportunities.
