Description

Galileo Constellation Deployment and Replenishment Architect in the Galileo Constellation Analysis Unit, Galileo System Engineering Service, Galileo Programme Office, Galileo and EGNOS Programme Department, Directorate of Navigation.

The Galileo Constellation Analysis Unit is in charge of constellation deployment, replenishment and mission analysis activities for the overall Galileo system deployment, including future Galileo launches and LEOPs, constellation deployment planning, and maintenance and upgrades of the constellation mission analysis facility. The Unit consists of a team of ESA experts, complemented with industry resources.

Duties

Under the direct authority of the Head of the Galileo Constellation Analysis Unit, you will be responsible for constellation deployment and replenishment tasks for the Galileo Programme within the project boundaries and constraints:

 

  • Defining the Galileo Constellation Deployment, Maintenance and Replenishment Plan, which maintains service availability, taking into account satellite deployment constraints, satellite reliability, spare policy and the satellite and launcher procurement plan;
  • Liaising with Programme stakeholders for matters relating to constellation deployment, maintenance and replenishment;
  • Overseeing the definition and implementation of constellation critical requirements over the entire system life cycle, from LEOP to satellite end of life and disposal, to ensure navigation service performances;
  • Driving the Galileo Disposal Orbit Strategy, which ensures compliance with space debris regulations and the long-term exploitability of the constellation orbits;
  • Generating constellation replenishment, orbit and mission analysis products and associated technical notes;
  • Coordinating the tasks carried out by the industry teams in the domain of mission analysis and constellation replenishment;
  • Liaising with the Space Segment Team in its area of expertise, in particular the avionics subsystem, and its contribution to the overall mission objectives and navigation service performances;
  • Liaising with the Ground Segment, Operations and Service Teams in their areas of expertise, in particular flight dynamics;
  • Liaising with the launcher provider, ensuring proper implementation of launcher requirements relating to the deployment of satellites to the Galileo constellation, and proper disposal of launcher orbital stages;
  • Participating in critical operations, such as LEOP, manoeuvres and satellite anomalies, as part of the ESA Project Team;
  • Leading the procurement and maintenance of constellation mission analysis and constellation replenishment tools to perform the analysis needed to accomplish the tasks described above, as required by the Programme;
  • Performing on-site maintenance and evolution of the tools described above in order to maintain a complete overview and control of the Unit’s software infrastructure;
  • Generating lessons learned and contributing to the knowledge management initiatives in the Directorate of Navigation.

 

You will cooperate closely with the other team members and with other teams within the Galileo Programme, particularly those responsible for satellite platform and ground segment procurement, and operations support.

Education

A master’s degree in aerospace engineering or another relevant domain is required for this post.

Additional requirements

A background and substantial experience in GNSS Phase C/D projects and system engineering is considered an asset.

A good background in space system design, manufacturing and testing is also considered an asset. 

Knowledge of modern computer systems, programming languages and constellation mission analysis is required. 

A deep understanding of constellation aspects of satellite navigation systems, such as Galileo and GPS, is also required.

You should have good leadership, interpersonal and communication skills. You should have the ability to work autonomously, effectively and cooperatively in a diverse, international team environment, defining and implementing solutions in line with team and individual objectives and project deadlines. You should also have good technical, analytical, organisational and reporting skills, a proactive attitude to solving problems and an interest in innovative technologies.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
