Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. This position is located in the Geneva Environment Network Secretariat (GEN), Europe Office, United Nations Environment Programme. The Geneva Environment Network is a cooperative partnership of over 75 environment and sustainable development organizations based in the International Environment House and elsewhere in the Geneva area, including United Nations offices and programmes, local authorities and non-governmental organizations. Set up in 1999 and supported by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, the Geneva Environment Network secretariat, led by UN Environment, actively promotes increased cooperation and networking between its members. The Geneva Environment Network Secretariat aims to promote access to the information resources of its members and outreach to the general public and to selected target groups. More information https://www.genevaenvironmentnetwork.org/ Under the direct supervision of the Geneva Environment Network Coordinator, the intern will: • Assist in launching and developing activities and projects concerning Environmental Information and Public Awareness, by helping to organize outreach meetings and gathering of information and materials. • Assist the team in organizing hybrid meetings by over-seeing logistics, preparing invitations, summaries and other related material. • Assisting in management of the Geneva Environment Network digital and social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Youtube; • Assist with calendar of events and the update of the website. • Assist the secretariat with day-to-day tasks, as required for the implementation of the work programme.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree. Preferred area of study for this internship: Environment and communication or related field and must: Be computer literate in standard software applications; Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and, knowledge of French are required. NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of confident" in two of the four areas.
