The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB/the Bank) is seeking to recruit an Intern, Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises. The successful candidate will be based at CDB’s headquarters in St. Michael, Barbados.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Projects Department (PD) is accountable for the pipeline and portfolio of capital and technical assistance (TA) projects. The PD is responsible for the identification, appraisal, and supervision of capital and TA projects and sector loans in the Bank’s portfolio. In addition, the Department is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the status of the Bank’s loan portfolio; for the preparation of sector analyses and policy papers, delivery of capacity development training in Borrowing Member Countries (BMCs) in the areas of project development, project management and macro-economic management; and for provision of assistance to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The operations of the Private Sector Division (PSD) of the Projects Department are anchored in CDB’s Private Sector Strategy (PSS) 2023 - 2028. The PSS focuses on enhancing private sector ecosystems in CDB’s BMCs to facilitate the continued growth of firms.

The PSS has three (3) strategic priorities:

  • improving the enabling environment;
  • promoting access to finance; and
  • promoting enterprise development.

The MSME Unit provides programmatic support to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs in CDB’s BMCs. 

THE ROLE

To bolster work in enterprise development, the Unit requires additional support to augment its technical, research and development and client engagement capacity.

  1. Objectives
  1. To support the enterprise development team in identifying potential growth opportunities for the organisation.
  1. To assist in research, analysis, and documentation of best practices in enterprise development.
  1. To contribute to the implementation of enterprise development initiatives and projects.
  1. Scope of Work
  1. Conduct research on industry trends, market opportunities, and potential business sectors for enterprise development.
  1. Assist in the development of concept notes, appraisal documents, power point presentations, infographics for enterprise development projects.
  1. Support in organising workshops, training sessions, and events related to enterprise development.
  1. Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather data, information, and feedback for enterprise development activities.
  1. Assist in monitoring and evaluating the impact of enterprise development interventions.
  1. Creating and updating stakeholder databases, including business support organisations, consultants and other partners and in disseminating information.
  1. Assisting with co-creation of marketing and promotion materials for PSD.
  1. Assisting with general MSME initiatives. 

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

The intern will report to Head (ag), PSD or their designate. 

EDUCATION AND COMPETENCIES

  • Enrolled in a Management Studies major; Economics or another related field, or recently graduated (not more than 12 months); 
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data effectively;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other relevant software applications;
  • Knowledge of enterprise development concepts, principles, and best practices would be an asset

COMPETENCIES

The intern should possess:

  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail; and
  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision, and to take initiative. 

This assignment will be carried out over a 3-month period, commencing in June 2024.
