UNDP first became active in Uzbekistan in 1993 and has over subsequent decades implemented hundreds of projects alongside the national government, business, civil society and academic. The directions of UNDP’s work in Uzbekistan reflect the current UN Country Programme Document (CPD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for 2021-2025. They also align with the national Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the 2030 Agenda, and Uzbekistan’s Development Strategy for 2022-2026. Throughout 2020 UNDP helped address the national health and socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and is continuing to actively assist in Uzbekistan’s inclusive, green recovery.  

The Communications Hub at UNDP Uzbekistan supports the positioning of the organization and entails developing and promoting high-quality content, communicating about UNDP Uzbekistan’s work through digital and social media and engaging mass media. We are looking for a communications intern who will provide technical support in generating catchy written content in three languages and help us boost the UNDP reach and engagement by attracting new audiences.

The gender intern will play a crucial role in ensuring that UNDP's communications efforts are gender-responsive and inclusive. They will contribute to developing content that addresses gender equality and women's empowerment, as well as support initiatives aimed at reaching diverse gender identities and perspectives.

Position purpose 

The Gender/Communications intern will support Communication Analyst/ Head of SPIU by assisting in the development and promotion of high-quality content across various platforms. While ensuring the published materials are gender-responsive, inclusive and aligned with UNDP’s commitment. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Translation and Content Generation:

  • Provide quick and quality written translation English-Uzbek.
  • Assist the Communications Analyst in generating social media content.
  • Generate monthly digests of UNDP activity.
  • Add content to UNDP corporate website.
  • Provide other support as needed in drafting human interest stories, photo essays, video reels, and other work of the Communication unit.

Support for Call Umida Initiative:

  • Assist in organizing and coordinating activities related to the Initiative.
  • Provide logistical support for events and meetings.
  • Collaborate with private sector stakeholders to ensure the smooth execution of Call Umida Initiative.
  • Collect news highlights and file documents on the progress of the Initiative.

Gender-Related Information Management:

  • Gather data on gender-related issues and trends in Uzbekistan.
  • Compile and maintain databases of relevant gender-related resources.
  • Help to disseminate gender-related information to internal and external stakeholders.

Support for Gender Communication Campaigns:

  • Assist in the planning and coordination of activities for gender-related campaigns, such as the 16 Days Against Violence campaign.
  • Collaborate with partners and stakeholders to raise awareness about gender-based violence.
  • Provide administrative support for campaign events, including logistics, communication, and documentation.

Presentation Preparation:

  • Assist in the preparation of presentations, reports, and briefing materials related to gender issues.
  • Coordinate with team members to ensure that presentations align with organizational objectives and messaging.

Correspondence Handling:

  • Respond to inquiries, requests, and correspondence related to gender/communication initiatives and activities.
  • Maintain regular communication with internal and external stakeholders regarding gender-related matters.
  • Coordinate meetings, appointments, and follow-up actions as needed.

Document Filing and Management:

  • Assist in improving and maintaining electronic filing systems for documents.
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of reports, memos, and other relevant documents.
  • Assist in developing and implementing document management protocols to enhance efficiency.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Undertake additional tasks as requested by the Communication Analyst/Head of SPIU, contributing to the overall goals and objectives of the respective units.


Institutional Arrangement 

The Intern works in close collaboration with the Programme, Operations teams and projects’ staff in the CO staff to exchange information and ensure consistent service delivery.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Applicants to the internship must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) in social media, communications, journalism, public relations or other related fields; 

(b) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation

Experience:

Demonstrated interest and/or experience:

For communication intern: 

  • Photo and video filming/editing
  • Canva and design software proficiency
  • Human interest story drafting
  • Social media management, including Instagram stories and Telegram editing
  • Preferred experience in analytics reporting

For gender intern:

  • Knowledgeable about gender concepts, policies, and frameworks.
  • Skilled in gender-related research, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Proficient in developing visual communication materials like infographics.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage tasks and meet deadlines, with cultural sensitivity and inclusivity.
 Required Skills:
  • A well-organized individual with the ability to multi-task;  
  • Ability to work productively and effectively with others and individually;  
  • Respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and the UNDP Statement of Purpose.
