Mission and objectives

UNDP is the knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development in the UN Development System and serves as the integrator for collective action to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP’s policy work carried out at HQ, Regional and Country Office levels, forms a contiguous spectrum of deep local knowledge to cutting-edge global perspectives and advocacy. In this context, UNDP invests in the Global Policy Network (GPN), a network of field-based and global technical expertise across a wide range of knowledge domains and in support of the signature solutions and organizational capabilities envisioned in the Strategic Plan. Within the GPN, the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) has the responsibility for developing all relevant policy and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. BPPS’s staff provides technical advice to Country Offices; advocates for UNDP corporate messages, represents UNDP at multi-stakeholder fora including public-private dialogues, government and civil society dialogues, and engages in UN inter-agency coordination in specific thematic areas. BPPS works closely with UNDP’s Crisis Bureau (CB) to support emergency and crisis response. BPPS ensures that issues of risk are fully integrated into UNDP’s development programmes. BPPS assists UNDP and partners to achieve higher quality development results through an integrated approach that links results based management and performance monitoring with more effective and new ways of working. BPPS supports UNDP and partners to be more innovative, knowledge and data driven including in its programme support efforts The Governance team in BPPS is responsible for supporting UNDP’s work on Governance across the organization including on anti-corruption, legal identity, inclusive political processes, parliamentary development, elections, SDG 16 implementation and monitoring, local development, youth empowerme

Context

UNDP's Global Governance Programme "Governance for People and Planet" supports UNDP's partners in establishing the governance institutions and processes needed to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Just, Peaceful and Inclusive Societies). The Open and Inclusive Public Sphere (OIPS) area of the Global Governance Programme focuses on creating the conditions for all members of society to meaningfully engage in public life as positive agents of change. Key workstreams under this area are: civic engagement, access to information and social inclusion. The OIPS team recently developed a series of foundational papers to layout the goals and strategies of the OIPS area. Copy editing support is needed to finalize these papers.

Task description

We are looking for an Online Volunteer who under the guidance of the Global Lead (Open and Inclusive Public Sphere) will support us by copy editing policy documents on promoting an open and inclusive public sphere (OIPS). In particular, the Online Volunteer is asked to: - Familiarize him/herself with the key concepts of UNDP's work on promoting an OIPS - Review and provide copy editing of the following documents: 1. Policy paper: OIPS - a conceptual framework (approx. 20 pages in MS Word) 2. Policy paper: OIPS - programmatic options (approx. 46 pages in MS Word) 3. Policy paper: OIPS - at a glance (approx. 7 pages in MS Word) The copy editing should follow UNDP's style guidelines which will be shared with the Online Volunteer in advance. The Online Volunteer/s will have the opportunity to build connections with the Governance Team at UNDP and learn about the ways in which the teamm works to promote of just, peaceful and inclusive societies
