Mission and objectives

UNESCO's founding mission, which was shaped by the events of World War II, is to advance peace, sustainable development and human rights by facilitating collaboration and dialogue among nations.[It pursues this objective through five major programme areas: education, natural sciences, social/human sciences, culture and communication/information. UNESCO sponsors projects that improve literacy, provide technical training and education, advance science, protect independent media and press freedom, preserve regional and cultural history, and promote cultural diversity. UNESCO assists in the translation and dissemination of world literature, helps establish and secure World Heritage Sites of cultural and natural importance, works to bridge the worldwide digital divide, and creates inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication.[14] UNESCO has launched several initiatives and global movements, such as Education For All.

Context

The Communications Assistant is assigned to the UNESCO Desk in Kyiv to provide, under overall guidance of the Head of the UNESCO Liaison Desk and direct supervision of the National Communications Officer, support to the UNESCO communications activities in the country. The Communications Assistant will primarily be responsible for supporting the communications efforts of the UNESCO Desk in Kyiv. The incumbent shall work closely with UNESCO staff/consultants based in Kyiv and other cities as well as representatives of relevant UNESCO sectors outside of Ukraine.

Task description

- Assists in implementation of communication plans and related activities of the UNESCO Desk in Kyiv. - Assists in maintaining database of the documents, photos and videos of the office, is responsible for storing, uploading, managing and sharing per request different types of materials produced by the office staff, project partners, contracted personnel, consultants, etc. - Contributes to drafting content for social media pages of the Office. - Assists with producing photo and video materials. - Edits videos, combines footage into different types of videos for various purposes (social media platforms, presentations, background videos during conferences, etc). - Edits photos to align them according to UNESCO standards. - Contributes to the management of the calendar of the office activities regularly updates it, ensures that all important dates and deadlines are inserted in a timely manner. - Assists with administrative tasks related to communications activities. - Monitors activities and communications releases, social media updates and news of UNESCO partners, relevant UN Agencies in Ukraine, relevant national and international NGOs; flags important updates to the National Communications Officer. - Keeps track of the visibility items of the Office, ensures there is a sufficient supply of branded items and handouts. - In close cooperation with the National Communications Officer, assists in coordination with the media through activities such as organizing site visits, facilitating photo coverage and TV footage, collecting and preparing visuals packages to be shared with media. - Performs other tasks and functions related to communications priorities of the UNESCO Desk in Kyiv.
