Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skillsets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

Overview of CHAI’s Vaccines Program

To ensure all children have access to effective and affordable immunization, addressing the main causes of child mortality, CHAI’s Vaccines Markets Team works with vaccine manufacturers, the Gavi Alliance and other global stakeholders to improve availability, affordability and diversity of supply for existing and future Gavi vaccines. In doing this, CHAI is applying the techniques it has used successfully to improve access to HIV/AIDS and malaria treatment: improving market demand transparency for individual suppliers and working closely with these suppliers to optimize their commercial, costing and pricing strategies in low- and middle-income markets. In doing so, this ensures the availability of vaccines at affordable yet commercially sustainable prices. The pandemic context has only reinforced the importance of CHAI’s Vaccines Markets team’s work.

The Vaccines Markets team is seeking an Associate Director to lead a high-performing team and CHAI’s market-shaping interventions aiming to enhance access to Gavi-supported and novel antigens. Target geographies include both Gavi-supported countries as well as middle-income countries. The Associate Director will lead partner- and supplier-facing engagements that help to address key market risks for these antigens and advance the ecosystem’s collective approach to optimizing market-shaping best practices in a dynamic market environment (e.g., increasing market uncertainty and volatility). This will require extensive collaboration across CHAI’s vaccine program team and country teams, as well as external partners (e.g., Gavi, BMGF, UNICEF, WHO, CEPI, Linksbridge).

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with outstanding conceptual, analytical, communication and leadership skills. The successful candidate will adhere to the core CHAI values of resourcefulness, entrepreneurialism, flexibility, independence, humility, and work ethic. The Associate Director will report to the Director, Vaccine Markets.

This position is flexible to be based in a country where CHAI operates, subject to country leadership approval where applicable.

Responsibilities
  • Manage, coach and develop a remote team of 5-7 full time employees (2-3 Program Managers/Technical Advisors and 3-4 (Senior) Associates)
  • Lead the design and implementation of market-shaping interventions (e.g., market intelligence, innovative financing, business planning support) that improve supply security and affordability of vaccines and accelerate availability in LMICs
  • Oversee analysis on vaccine market dynamics, such as demand forecasting, uptake modelling, production capacity planning, portfolio and pipeline planning, marketing strategies, etc.
  • Represent CHAI in and lead strategic initiatives at the global ecosystem level, e.g., understanding key market-shaping trends and defining market-shaping best practices to future proof the market
  • Manage and strengthen relationships with vaccine manufacturers that are or have the potential to become significant, quality-assured producers of vaccines for LMICs (incl. Developing Country Vaccine Manufacturers (DCVMs) across India, China, Korea, and Africa) by providing valuable market insights, offering targeted business planning support (e.g., go-to-market strategies for LMICs, vaccine pipeline planning) and guidance to navigate regulatory and procurement processes, and ultimately strengthening their commercial sustainability and interest in LMIC markets
  • Lead relationship management, budget development, and grant reporting with key donors, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, and MedAccess
  • Manage and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, such as Gavi, UNICEF SD, WHO, IAVI, Linksbridge and other organizations in the field of vaccine market dynamics
  • Lead and oversee preparations of presentations, reports, and other analyses to inform global policy and increase the evidence base for high-impact interventions
  • Creatively scope and initiate projects that could contribute to further improving supply sustainability and accessibility of vaccines for LMICs
  • Support the development of concept notes and new projects
  • Oversee administrative activities related to the program, including closely liaising with team leadership to manage overall program budget, logistics, and human resources
  • Any other duties as required
