Mission and objectives

UNHCR is mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international action for the worldwide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. UNHCR’s primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. In its efforts to achieve this objective, UNHCR strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, and to return home voluntarily. By assisting refugees to return to their own country or to settle permanently in an other country, UNHCR also seeks lasting solutions to their plight

Context

Objective of the task is to collaborate with an online volunteer for the purpose of strengthening UNHCR’s communication with external audiences, including refugees, government authorities and partners. The Protection/Communications Online Volunteer is a member of the Protection Unit and will report to the Community-Based Protection Officer. UNHCR provides support to the Government in protection and realization of solutions for forcibly displaced and stateless persons. In this context, UNHCR is seeking support in enhancing the visibility of its activities and strengthening its communication with refugee communities across Czechia. As such, the selected online volunteer will primarily: 1. Support UNHCR’s work in highlighting the realities of refugees in the Czech Republic by writing and showcasing human stories from the field; supporting the compilation of soundbites and quotes from refugees; and supporting the development of products for external audiences. 2. Support UNHCR’s work in communicating with communities by assisting with the digestibility and aesthetics of UNHCR’s HELP website; supporting the compilation and design of informational material for refugees; and strengthening the accessibility of information by refugees of different ages, genders and diversity considerations. Selected volunteers will have a chance to learn more on the protection and integration of refugees and asylum-seekers while supporting the team at first hand. We expect the selected online volunteer(s) to start with this task as soon as possible, and within one week.

Task description

• Draft interesting human stories on resilience, integration and adaptation for publication and sharing with external audiences. A minimum of two stories will be required to be drafted during the volunteer period. • Format UNHCR’s HELP website with text, colours, images and infographics that make the website appealing, easy to navigate, understandable and digestible by users. Support the adoption of accessibility tools to make the website easier to access by persons with specific needs. • Compile informational material for distribution to refugees during participatory assessments and other engagements. Format documents and informational material for refugees and other stakeholders. A minimum of three different information, communication and/or education materials will expect to be formatted during the volunteer period. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and be eager to learn and to contribute to UNHCR’s objectives. S/he will be a team-player with effective written and verbal communication skills. S/he will also collaborate with colleagues in different functions and areas of work. The selected candidate will be required to be able to work effectively remotely, including through the use of UNHCR’s corporate tools, such as Microsoft Office. UNHCR's workplace is international and multicultural and therefore inclusive and diverse. It offers opportunities that contribute to professional growth and development and will require the Protection/Communications Online Volunteer to have cultural awareness, sensitivity and ability to adapt to different communication styles and behaviours.
